Anger toward a brother

 

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Am I my brother's keeper?

I was thinking about this yesterday, how we ask the question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" compared to how Cain asked it. I think nowadays, we ask the question in search of an answer. To what extent are we to take care of our brothers and sisters? But when Cain asked the question, he was backtalking to God. Can you imagine?! He just killed his brother and then was flip with God when asked about Abel. The question was pure callousness (IMO).
John MacArthur wrote: "Cain's sarcasm was a play on words, based on the fact that Abel was the "keeper" of sheep."*

     Thomas Nelson, Inc. Nashville, TN. 
Charles Spurgeon wrote: “The cool impudence of Cain is an indication of the state of heart which led up to his murdering his brother; and it was also a part of the result of his having committed that terrible crime. He would not have proceeded to the cruel deed of bloodshed if he had not first cast off the fear of God and been ready to defy his Maker.”
Yet, when God imparts His judgment, suddenly Cain is upset. In verse 13 he said, “My punishment is greater than I can bear." and another translation reads "My guilt is too great to bear," but seriously, there's nothing to indicate to me that Cain felt guilty for what he did. He had to have known that God sees all, knows all. Cain also had to have known that it was wrong. 
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

     Today we need to be our brother's (and sister's) keeper. "See something. Say something." Be an advocate for those who can't or won't speak for themselves. When we take on that nurturing role, our hearts can't help but be filled with love for one another.
     I remember when I was a teenager, at least 16-years-old, my parents went on vacation and left my brother, Kevin, and me home alone for the first time ever. Kevin developed some weird something on the roof of his mouth. I about freaked out. I didn't know what to do. My concern was for my little brother and making him well; I didn't want to contact my parents because I wanted to show them that we could take care of each other on our own. There also may have been a tiny bit of worry that I fed him something wrong that caused this condition.
     After calming down, I thought, "What would mom do?" and I called the doctor. They got us in right away (probably because of my panicky voice). It turned out it was the result of too much sugar and it would go away in a few days. My point is, as much as my little brother and I argued, when it came down to him needing me, I was all in. This isn't to boast, this is to point out that no matter what you have going on with your siblings (or anyone), you are responsible to try to help them, and you should want to, as a Christian, and a member of the human race. Some people cannot, will not be helped, but if that's the case, give it up to God.
     To be fully transparent, I write this even as I know my heart is turned against certain people who give me so much grief. It's something I'm constantly working on. I used to think I couldn't talk about something unless I overcame that something, but I don't think like that anymore. We should share our struggles as well as our triumphs. In this way, we let others who are struggling know that they're not alone. Social media makes people think that everyone else has it all figured out, that everyone else is happy. My goal is to show the opposite, in a way. I want people to know that I'm just like them with the same issues and worries. I slip and fall, then get back up over and over again. I don't have it all figured out and I never will, but that's okay.

Love one another

 

Update - not necessarily on topic, but it may circle around as it often does (thank you, Jesus)...I had four moles removed from my face, and one from my neck late Monday. The last time I had this done was twenty years ago, and it was just two from my face. I remember that I still went to work, still went to school, and still took care of my daughters, the house, etc...and so assumed it would be the same this time. Nope. 
     Either because of where they were removed from, or five versus two, or being older, (or maybe I'm just not remembering last time very well), this time seems a lot different. Granted, it's only the morning of day 3, but still--my face hurts and is interfering with my 'to-do' list.
     I'm not sharing all of this for sympathy but to share God's sovereignty. If I weren't in pain, I'd be jamming in as much as possible into each day instead of taking it easy like I need to in order to heal.
     Once I realized this, I quit grumbling and started thanking God for taking care of me (which I should have been doing anyway). He is so good to me, and to all of us. We are His children. He loves us, unconditionally. He wants us to love one another, and live in unity. Everyone is your brother and your sister. Love one another accordingly.

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
Romans 12:10 ESV

Children are a blessing

 

When I think about all of the children of the world who are being abused, it just crushes my heart. Please, if you see something, say something.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
    the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior

Let them know they're loved

Let's continue to pray for the children of the world. Pray that they come to know Jesus and His great love for them. 
     One way to get the message out is through Operation Christmas Child. When the children receive a shoebox, it's not just toys they receive, but they're also presented with the gospel. Let a child know that not only does God love them, but that also, a stranger, from another country is thinking about them and praying for them.


You are a hiding place for me; 
you preserve me from trouble;

Pandemic and children

While adults everywhere are complaining and bemoaning having to wear masks, and that their freedoms are being restricted, we should stop and consider how this pandemic is affecting our children and the children around the world who don't have it so easy to begin with. 

Consider this data:
- This is a universal crisis and, for some children, the impact will be lifelong.

-It is pushing more households into multidimensional poverty

-Approximately 150 million additional children are living in multidimensional poverty – without access to essential services

-Up to 1.6 billion children and young people have been affected by school closures – many do not have Internet access at home

-An additional 1.2 million children and 56,700 mothers could die in 6 months due to disruption in basic interventions, based on the worst-case scenario

-As many as 132 million people may go hungry in 2020, of that 36 million children And ...

370 million children may miss out on nutritious school meals

-Due to COVID-19 measures, approximately 80 million children under the age of 1 in at least 68 countries may miss out on receiving life-saving vaccines

-An additional 124,000 children could be infected with HIV if prevention services are disrupted for 6 months

Pray for the children

Pray for the children of the world. This pandemic is affecting people all over the globe. Many see it as a time of pre-tribulation. It creates a sense of urgency to save as many souls as possible and to care for those who cannot help themselves.
     If you've been with me over the years, you know I'm a big proponent of Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse.
     This ministry provides gifts to children all over the world and simultaneously creates a means of sharing the gospel in areas that have never heard it before. The children share it with their parents, family, and even their villages. It is an amazing ministry.

Ask in prayer



This week we're asking God to heal our friends, family members, neighbors (everyone is our neighbor) by praying with a heart of faith, knowing He will answer our prayers and petitions.

T.K. who is having a high-risk surgery today; large mass on ovary not yet biopsied, complete hysterectomy
A.M. who is recovering from yesterday's surgery
D.A. who is preparing for a bone marrow transplant in the coming weeks; please also pray for his donor.
B.F. who has stage 4 cancer
T.F. who has cancer
S.S. who has pancreatic cancer
J.S. who is recovering from a heart attack and an illness
M.W. who has a lung or respiratory disease
T.H. who has stage 4 cancer
S.S. suffers from chronic pain due to CRPS and damaged nerves
W.D. who has a rare eye infection.

J.B. who is being treated for Lyme disease, praying for complete recovery and no after effects

Who is vulnerable?

The government and healthcare industry keep talking about "those who are most vulnerable" meaning people who are over 65 and/or have other health issues. However, I'm finding there are a lot of people over the age of 65 who don't identify with being vulnerable. Call it pride, or stubbornness (no offense to anyone <3 ), or a little from column A and a little from column B. I think it would help if we used a word other than "vulnerable". Maybe "susceptible"? People don't like to be vulnerable and will fight tooth and nail to prove that they aren't. The fact of the matter is our government has asked us to follow some guidelines to prevent a surge of coronavirus patients that will overpower our medical people, buildings and supplies resulting in unnecessary deaths. So, if there's any way people can refrain from going out in search of toilet paper (for whatever reason) or other needless errands and just wait this out, that would be great.
     I've been sick since late Friday, early Saturday. I have very mild symptoms and if this were any other time, I would just take some DayQuil and go to work, run errands, go to meetings, etc. but with there being a pandemic, I'm complying with self-quarantine guidelines. We all have to realize that it's not about how we feel, it's about the people we could be infecting. The same is true with the hoarding...this is not a time to be all about self-interest. We need to be lifting each other up, encouraging each other, helping each other. Production of toilet paper has not stopped.
     If you're healthy, check on your neighbors, the elderly, those who live alone. If you're sick, make some phone calls and reach out to people who are alone.
     We'll get through this. Trust in Jesus.

Follow and obey

I spent an hour looking for a post that I had "liked" yesterday. I was sure it would be in my activity log (Facebook), but I can't find it. The jest of it though was that maybe this pandemic was God trying to get our attention. I spend a lot of time reading the Old Testament and get caught up in God's people disobeying and so He has to do something drastic to get their attention, and they commit to doing whatever He says for a little while before turning back to their old ways. This is a time to obey, both God and man. The restrictions our government is putting on us are to save lives.
Before we get sick and/or learn of friends and family who are sick, we need to be in prayer first and foremost. We need to praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We need to give thanks for our blessings and use this special time to spread His word.
Even if this is Satan's work and he's trying to break us, by praising the Trinity and praying unceasingly, we're showing Satan that he can't take us away from our Father and he can't hurt us. We are children of God. We belong to Him and He will get us through this. Be strong during this time. Be a Christ-like example that others can look to for encouragement and compassion. Be knowledgable about the situation so you can calm others.

In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet, 
and his disease became severe. 
Yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, 
but sought help from physicians.

Pray for those who are sick and those who will become sick; for the doctors, nurses, medical staff, EMTs, police, and firefighters. Let's pray for wisdom and foresight for our government leaders. Pray for people to be patient, kind, compassionate toward one another and to follow any guidelines put in place for our well-being and safety. Pray also for our infrastructure and supplies and economy. Let us pray for the unsaved that they may seek the Lord through this and come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. To God be the glory.

Valentine’s Day and a Colonoscopy

My late husband passed away on Valentine’s Day, 2011 for lack of $1000 (basically), the cost of a colonoscopy back then. For the past several years, the Affordable Care Act has paid for preventive medicine and tests like these, and I sincerely hope that people took advantage of that; it had to have saved lives. With the new administration, it probably won’t be long before the Act is repealed, and people who benefited from it will be back to fending for themselves, often times forgoing medical attention rather than have to come up with the exorbitant amount of money that healthcare now costs.

I don’t want to get into a political debate. My only purpose here is for everyone to take advantage of preventive tests before they are no longer feasibly available to the poor and middle class. I think healthcare should be a right, not a privilege, but that it was simply done badly. It needs to be fixed, but, more likely, the government will just do away with it completely.

Get a physical exam, bloodwork, mammogram, colonoscopy, etc. now. Don’t wait! If you wait, it could cost you greatly. See my post from several years back, about the cost of not getting tested. Click here.
