today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Journey and a scam

Words aren't really coming to me this morning "on topic" so I thought I'd just tell you about something that happened yesterday and see if the rabbit trail makes it back around to the main theme.
     I've been getting to know people on Twitter, mostly Christians. We praise God, share Bible verses, and lift each other up. Last week a woman reached out to me through Twitter's private messaging system, asking about my faith, about being saved. She is supposedly from Switzerland, and supposedly only has a few weeks to a few months to live. I was thrilled about this opportunity and shared my testimony with her.
     We wrote back and forth for several days, always talking about God and faith. She asked me to pray for her daily as well as people in other countries who are fighting Covid. Then, she asked me to email her because she was wanting to step away from Twitter. I was praying that she wouldn't ask me for money, that this wasn't all a scheme of some sort. Imagine my disappointment when I received an email from her that was obviously a form letter she has sent out countless times before, talking about "funds".
     Most people would just walk away at this point, but I feel compelled to find out more. How can someone try to scam others under the guise of loving Jesus? It sickens me. Then I think of all of the prosperity gospel "leaders" and I realize what their horrible example tells the world: 'it's okay to turn the gospel around for your own financial gain.'
     I let this really bring me down yesterday but today, I'm giving it up to God, asking Him to guide whatever words I use to respond to her. Circling back around from the rabbit trail...God put us here to build relationships with one another and to bring glory to Him. It's going to include meeting people who misrepresent His love and grace. We need to pray for them and love on them as well. This is our journey. This is our hallelujah.

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 150:1-6 ESV

"Record Your Days" January 3, 2018

The Preacher spoke about this life and about time as a commodity, measured in days. He was speaking on Psalm 90 and suggested that we record each day as a means of numbering our days "that we may gain a heart of wisdom". This is my new project for the New Year. It will bring focus to accomplishing something each day, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, ...

I've read these verses several times over the years but still, this morning got something different from them. It probably has to do with reading scripture in light of what's happening in life at this moment. That's how we find answers to life's questions...

Every day is a hallelujah!

 Image by Jackson David from Pixabay
I'm focused on Donnie Allen this week. His life and his ministry are inspirational to everyone who knew him. A friend posted, "I never met someone who had such a strong desire to preach the gospel to everybody you came in contact with. I pray that I can receive that passion as well." This is also my prayer.
     I'm also focused on his #ThisIsMyHallelujah (See Monday's post). To be able to turn such a difficult journey into a hallelujah is so awesome, and so Christlike. Donnie was such a true image-bearer for the Lord.
     According to dictionary.com "Hallelujah" means, "God be praised." As a noun, it is an "expression of worship or rejoicing."
     Every day we should shout, "Hallelujah!" Every day is a hallelujah!

But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen,
nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him”—
1 Corinthians 2:9 ESV

I'm sharing this song, "Hallelujah." It is not the original one written by Leonard Cohen, that mixes religion and sex. Kelley Mooney rewrote the lyrics, with the permission of the original author to tell the story of the Gospel. This rendition is sung by sisters Callahan and Cassandra Star Armstrong. All of the links in this paragraph tell the story of the song and video.

Our permanent home

 Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

I would love to be able to capture this Bible passage in a picture and share it with all of you, but I would never be able to do it justice. The glory of our permanent home, the place our loving Father has prepared for us is beyond our human comprehension. John described it to the best of his ability (and did a wonderful job, I might add). I love reading this passage and imagining what he saw, and what we will all someday see:
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:1-5 ESV

This Is My Hallelujah

 Image by Tumisu from Pixabay

Our dear brother in Christ, Donnie Allen, passed away yesterday afternoon. He will be deeply missed. Words just cannot express how much. He touched so many lives during his stay here on earth that I am in awe of him. To live a life that dedicated and focused on Christ should be an inspiration to us all. We have this real-life example of why we're here and how we're to live.
     Donnie and Amanda created a Facebook group when they started this bone marrow transplant journey in order to keep all of us informed.  Its hashtag is #ThisIsMyHallelujah and Donnie used it as a means to inspire and share his passion for Jesus. It was as much a means to share his spiritual journey as it was his physical one. Even with everything he went through, he put Jesus first. The group has over 1,000 followers.
     Additionally, those posts have been shared in other groups, and by other individuals. I can only imagine the breadth and scope of people that Donnie reached through this platform. He and Amanda shared the gospel with countless people in Cleveland, as well. What a testimony to God's plan for our lives that He uses situations both good and bad to secure more souls for heaven!

Amanda wrote:
It is with a very painful heart that I tell you all that Donnie Allen passed peacefully today Sunday May 16 at 430pm surrounded by his family.
Donnie’s journey is now complete and he has been healed and is in the arms of Jesus.
I thank you all for the many hours of prayers said on our behalf and ask that you now shift your prayers towards our family and the coming days ahead.

     I feel like I've written often about grief and dying over the past fourteen months, but like I've said, it's a clear sign for the Church to get serious about revival and bringing as many people to Christ as possible. This week I would like for us to focus our thoughts and prayers on "the hope." It is my hope that this will remind us why we're here. This is just a pitstop in our lives because Earth is NOT our home.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:4 ESV

Be rooted in Him

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Look forward

Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
Ponder the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.
Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil.

Seek wisdom and understanding

Image by Gordon Johnson from Pixabay

I read through numerous bible verses every morning to find the one that speaks to me and also goes along with the topic of prayer for the week. Today's verse was like, "bam," smacking my forehead and saying, "Here I am."
     I have been struggling with my feelings for a long time, but it's been worse recently. So, I've been praying for help, for God to soften my heart, and to show me how I can see things differently. I've also been praying for Him to help me with my focus away from earthly matters, and back on Him.
     Last evening, during bible study, someone talked about when we distance ourselves from God, we need to almost start all over again at building that relationship. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but getting back to that point where everything is about Him is a critical first step and I believe, the rest will follow. We build that relationship with Him through prayer and reading the Bible. That's where we find Him, so that's where we need to be.
     This verse is reassuring to me that I'm on the right track.

Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:2-5 ESV

God focused

 Image by PublicDomainPictures from Pixabay
Yesterday, my focus improved. It drifted back to earthly things several times, but it was an improvement over the past several weeks. Sometimes, I need physical "things" to help me focus on God, especially after I've spent so much time tied up in earthly concerns. So yesterday I started out by listening to a Christian music radio station on the way to work (K-Love). That helped lift my spirits. It also put a song in my head that reminded me of Him throughout the day: At the Cross by Chris Tomlin.
     Later in the day, I took my own advice and when I was tempted to scroll through the news apps, I put on my headphones and listened to a reading of the Psalms on the YouVersion app. I said little prayers throughout the day, but need to get back to where I was before becoming consumed with the world. Then, lastly, after dinner, I spent time in the word, reading scripture and commentary.
     I don't say any of this to boast but just to share that returning my focus on things above made a huge difference in my spiritual and mental state, even just approaching it with baby steps.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 ESV

David Guzik wrote, regarding this verse:
iii. Jesus didn’t just tell them to stop worrying; He told them to replace worry with a concern for the kingdom of God. A habit or a passion can only be given up for a greater habit or passion.
iv. “What this verse demands is, therefore, a commitment to find and to do the will of God, to ally oneself totally with his purpose. And this commitment must come first.” (France)*
In talking about Matthew 6:22-23, Guzik refers to verse 33, and I've found this to be true:
Being single minded brings light to our lives, and we are also happier and more content when we focus on the kingdom of God and His righteousness, knowing that all the material things will be added to us (Matthew 6:33). But when we are double-minded, it is as if your whole body is full of darkness. We try to live for two masters at the same time, and it puts a dark shadow over everything in our life.*

Focus on things above

 Image by Pexels from Pixabay

A young lady in our Women's Bible Study group yesterday shared her frustration with where our (meaning the Church's) focus has been the past several months. It seems apparent that a lot of people have been focused on the presidential election. It's caused a great divide and has consumed so much of our attention that she feels, and I agree, that we haven't been as focused as we need to be on God.
     We're allowing ourselves to be consumed with earthly things and our spiritual welfare is suffering for it. Satan is winning (IMO). He's pitting husband against wife, son against mother, neighbor against neighbor. He's filling our hearts with hatred or at the very least, resentment. He's distracting us from what's important.
     I would like to encourage everyone to spend extra time in prayer this week. Instead of reading a news app, consider reading a chapter from Psalms instead. If you know someone who's feeling anxious or overwhelmed, reach out to them and be that voice of reason that they need right now. Focus on God, being His image-bearer, and a beacon of light in a world of darkness.

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Colossians 3:2 ESV

Love in truth

  By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
  My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
1 John 3:16-23 NKJV

Knowing will set you free

I think most of us know this passage, but to understand how the truth will set us free, we need to read the whole passage:

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
John 8:31-36 ESV

Know the word of truth

 Image by andrewsbird from Pixabay

This is why I like to look at more than one version of the Bible, especially if I'm unclear about something... For this particular verse (1 Timothy 2:15), the NKJV says, "Be diligent..." but the ESV says, "Do your best..." Those two phrases don't denote the same amount of urgency (IMO).
     My husband is always saying, "The best way to recognize error is to know truth." He's heard that saying from various sources, and I've personally taken it to heart. When I think back to all of the misconceptions and just flat-out wrong biblical "interpretations" that I've believed in the past, it really upsets me. I had a hard time understanding the bible and so I just took people's word about what it meant. It turns out they were wrong. Maybe they didn't understand it either.
     Several years ago, my husband got me a John MacArthur Study Bible, and introduced me to commentaries. I attend a church that is focused on preaching from the Bible, verse by verse and so I'm learning now. I was biblically illiterate and I wasn't alone. Too many Christians don't take the time to read and study the Bible. It's God's guidebook for how to live our life here on Earth, and how to know we'll spend eternity with Him.
     When I was growing up, it was a "thing" for people to try "find" themselves. Everything they were searching for is in the Bible. Why am I here? What's the meaning of life? How can I find true peace? True love? True joy? It's all in there.
     Don't let the quantity of your biblical knowledge prevent you from sharing the gospel, though. You can comfortably and honestly share your testimony. If you're asked a question that you don't know the answer to, don't guess, just say you'll find out and get back to them.
     I don't mean to sound preachy, but this emphasis on "truth" has come up so many times over the past few weeks that I felt compelled to share it with you, and for us to pray about it. In my mind, truth leads to trust. We're less inclined to listen to someone who constantly lies than we are to someone who we can trust to be honest with us.
- Know truth and speak truth.
- Be confident in your belief.
- Share your testimony.
- Study scripture.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God,
a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who has no need to be ashamed,
rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV

Want to get to heaven?

The only way to get to Heaven is to believe in Jesus. You must repent of your sins and accept Him into your life.
You cannot get there by being "good."
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
Luke 18:19 ESV
You cannot get there by works.
For by grace you have been saved through faith.
And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV

You must believe.

Jesus said to him,
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6 ESV
