Our treasure is in Heaven

“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.
Luke 12:32-33 ESV

Help others help themselves

Jeff Bezos makes nearly $2500.00 per second. I don't think we need to worry about him having enough money for groceries. The owners of our local small businesses and people who made less than $269/week however (and therefore didn't qualify for unemployment and haven't received money from the CARES act yet) may be having a difficult time putting food on the table. So, my plan is to try whenever possible to shop local (and be more diligent about it than ever before). My last Amazon order was for things I absolutely could not find anywhere else, including antibacterial soap and a thermometer; I was frustrated trying to find certain items and so I gave in. With people still hoarding and so forth, some items are just going to be impossible to find, but for those not so specific items, I look forward to supporting as many different small businesses as possible. I'm even thinking of canceling my Prime membership. The price keeps going up and I don't really use any of the "extra" services anyway.

- You can support local even if you aren't comfortable being out and about as our country reopens. A lot of companies have expanded to online options during the shutdown and it seems they intend to still keep those services available, at least for the foreseeable future.
Side note:
The yoga studio I go to, Day Yoga Studio, has developed Livestream and on-demand classes. They just announced that they're looking to reopen May 26th but will still offer the online options. Throughout all of this, they have been able to stay in business by being creative and flexible. They kept in touch with their clientele and have come across with such a positive 'can do' attitude that they've been inspirational in their approach.
- You can tip more than normal. You can buy gift certificates/cards. If you use a shopping service (like Instacart) you can probably have almost anything local delivered to your door (contact-less).

- You can write a positive review of a place; share if you felt comfortable going there, if they were enforcing social distancing and other guidelines, what they're doing to make their customers feel safe.

Whatever we can do to help, is, of course, great, but if we can help in a way that allows others to help themselves, that may be more productive in regrowing our economy. It's like, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Maimonides

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.

Advocate

Image by Irina L from Pixabay

When I went back to college around 2011, my professors were very big on advocating for others. I was always one for believing in and rooting for the underdog in almost any situation, but this took it a step further. This involved actually speaking up for those who need a voice. It's one thing to cheer a person, or group of people, on, but it's another to speak up and give an opinion that might encourage others to take action in helping a group of people.
Our speech has a very real power of influencing others. It can promote actions to help or to hurt; it's up to us. Some people can't defend themselves. Either they don't feel comfortable doing that, or they feel like it's pointless, or maybe, they don't even realize they need help.
As our country reopens, please continue to do what you can for the needy. Food banks still need food. There are people who are still waiting for unemployment benefits. There are people who can't go back to work because they're high risk.
People all over the world have been without income these last several months and risk dying of starvation. There are organizations and missionary groups that try to help them and get food to them that we can support and spread the word about.
Maybe I'm rambling here; I just have so much on my heart and the words aren't conveying it heavily enough, I'm afraid. Just please, do anything you can to help those less fortunate than us. Pray. Donate. Spread the word.

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Proverbs 31:8-9 ESV

Share the bounty

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need,
yet closes his heart against him,
how does God's love abide in him?

Can I pray for you?

I am feeling very blessed. God has put people on my heart to reach out to, to help, to pray for. He is so good!
Yesterday morning, I couldn't think of anything to write and I was afraid I was going through a bit of a writer's block. Plus, I heard back from a magazine that I submitted to and I had completely missed that it was a themed submission. I was so embarrassed - me, who is such a stickler about reading instructions and I completely missed such an important detail and with a piece that was deeply personal and difficult to write. I made a huge leap from those two things happening, to "I should give up on writing." Talk about blowing stuff out of proportion. Plus, now I'm rambling on here over nothing...I guess my point is, God always helps me get back on track, so here I am.
I was reading prayer requests yesterday and came across one where the mission team asked someone if they (the missionaries) could pray for them. That opened doors for them to spread the gospel. My husband does that at restaurants and it's amazing to see people's reactions. Some people get uncomfortable and say, "No thank you. I'm good." Others will share something going on in their life for us to pray for, and then a few people have even joined us in prayer.
There have been a few instances in my life recently where I shared about something going "wrong" or that I was struggling with and someone asked if they could pray with me. Not only did the prayers help, but the act of someone asking to do that helped me because it immediately reminded me that I'm not alone, that others care, and that I can take everything to the Father.
Prayer is something we can all do and it is so very helpful, even to non-believers. People who claim they don't believe still appreciate it when Christians intercede for them to God; at least several who I've come in contact with.
Try it. Especially during these difficult times. People are scared, anxious, stressed and they're looking for answers, for hope. They want to know that there is Someone in charge who has complete control over the situation. They want to talk to Him and know that they're being heard.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Luke 6:20-21 ESV

How can I help?

During this time, many people and businesses need help. Depending on a person's situation or level of pride, they may not ask for help, though. So, I was wondering how do I find those who are suffering in silence? Then, I remembered, "Oh yeah, pray about it." I can't believe that isn't my first response to everything I do, think, wonder about, dwell on, ... I'm working on it; I want to take everything to the Lord. We don't have to go through anything alone. We can take everything to Him in prayer.
Last week I wrote about some of the sad and scary aspects of what's going on in our country, so this week, I want to talk about the good. So many people are reaching out to help others. The mask-making is an incredible example of people seeing a need and taking it upon themselves to fulfill that need.
Another selfless act that seemed to spread was all of the people who gave away their stimulus money to those who were in need or had a greater need.
Facebook groups formed just to share information about navigating unemployment, or receiving stimulus money, or finding a job. Other groups formed to offer emotional support for similar situations like being quarantined alone. Even though everything we've been going through is completely new to all of us, we have pulled together, identified problems, and come up with solutions. We're working together while separated. We're loving and sharing and reaching out using whatever tools we have, and if we don't have the right tools, then we repurpose the old ones or invent brand new ones. We could have let this destroy us, but we didn't. We're survivors!
It warms my heart to see so many do so much for others. I'm so inspired by my mom. She doesn't consider herself someone who is vulnerable. She seems to think that one's mental age takes precedence over one's physical age, therefore she is not "old" and she's only a "senior" when discounts are concerned. When the stay-at-home order first went into effect she was thinking of every possible scenario and how she could help others.
I'm praying for people and their specific needs and for people I don't know in more of a generic prayer, like, those who have been unemployed and haven't received unemployment yet; those who were self-employed and have had no income this whole time, etc. This is something we can all be doing and I'm sure all of you are. Some needs that I'm aware of:
- donations to food pantries/banks
- most charities have seen a drop in donations, so if you're able to give monetarily, consider that
- support local small businesses, restaurants, etc. You can buy gift certificates from most of them, especially if they aren't open to the public yet or are only open with limited services
- Target Dayton needs volunteers to deliver meals
- Handivan (Brookville, Ohio) needs volunteers to drive people to doctor's appointments
- contact neighbors, church family, etc. to see if they need anything, or just call to say 'hi', especially those who live alone.
- make cards for nursing home residents
- pray for God to guide you to someone who needs help, or who needs companionship, and/or someone with who you can share the gospel

‘If one of your brethren becomes poor,
and falls into poverty among you,
then you shall help him, like a stranger or a Sojourner,
that he may live with you.
Leviticus 25:35 ESV
