Family is a blessing

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Psalm 128:3 ESV

"The interesting thing about these two images, vines and olive plants, is that they are biblical symbols of the abundant life. They are not food staples like wheat or corn. They symbolize rich blessing.” (James Montgomery Boice, 1968)

“The vine and the olive are two of the best fruits…both together implying that a great part of a man’s temporal happiness consisteth in having a good wife and children.” (John Trapp, 1600s)
Words aren't coming to me this morning, but I came across this Bible verse which stated perfectly what is on my heart. Any of us who have family are truly blessed. What we do, how we handle those relationships is entirely up to us.

Please continue to pray for Donnie and Amanda. Their daughter wrote this prayer yesterday:
Lord, we come to you with open hearts and hands- Lord please remove the toxins and swelling from Dad's body. Lord, you’re the ultimate healer and he is here to fight this battle. Lord, please give him the strength to fight this through and move this almighty mountain. Allow him to return home to us for these grandbabies, his children, his wife, and our community. Lord, allow him to be rebuilt from the inside out and do your work on this earth longer. If anyone can heal him lord it’s you. Amen.

Mother's Day 2021

I was blessed to spend yesterday with my two daughters. We got Submarine House (yay, teezers!(basically, cheesy jalapeno poppers)) and watched Mulan. One of the main themes of the movie was devotion to family.
(While I realize that it highlights eastern religious beliefs, I appreciate the story and what it accomplishes.)
Sometimes we need what is essentially a children's story to remind us of family values: honoring your father and mother, love and devotion between siblings, sacrifice for one another.
Earlier that day, someone spoke in church about a woman who was estranged from both her mother and her children. He wondered what Mother's Day must look like, feel like to her. My heart just broke. My mother calls me multiple times a day. She worries about me constantly and stays involved in my life. My daughters and I have a special bond of not only mother-daughter, but also friendship, understanding, openness, love, and devotion. I can't imagine the heartbreak of not having such strong ties with these awesome women.
If possible, mend any fences with family. If it is not possible; if the abuse or hurt is too much to overcome, then please pray for that family member.

Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching,
Proverbs 1:8 ESV

Wisdom comes with age

Image by Georgi Dyulgerov from Pixabay

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days.
Job 12:12 ESV

I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’
Job 32:7 ESV

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 ESV

Respect the elderly

This falls under the heading, laws of kindness, and justice. When you're old(er), how do you want to be treated? Think about what you say and do and then imagine someone being like that toward you. I don't even mean "bad" treatment, just treatment that's different than how you are with someone younger.
For instance, a manager of a restaurant saying to an elderly woman, "Give me a hug, Grandma," or "Aren't you just so cute?!" (Two different restaurants). I hear people use a different voice with older friends and relatives than they do with others. It's as if they assume the person they're talking to won't understand what they're talking about. Be conscious of showing respect.

“You shall stand up before the gray head and
honor the face of an old man, and you shall f
ear your God: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:32 ESV

Our Father in Heaven

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
As we wrap up the week praying for our parents and guardians, let's give praise to Our Father in Heaven who knew us even before we were conceived.

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
Psalm 139:13-16 NKJV

Let go of the past

Just as your parents raised you and saw to your needs and loved you, you are called to reciprocate. I've known parents who made a lot of terrible, seemingly unforgivable mistakes (not mine; mine are awesome and my brother and I both feel super blessed to have been born to them).
Events, situations, experiences of the past may still weigh on your heart and you feel incapable of forgiving the offending family member, but you do have the capacity to do so. You just need to find the way.
        - Pray about it. Ask God to soften your heart.
        - Talk about it. It's difficult to talk openly about something that causes you pain, so find someone you can trust completely, even if they only listen. It's a chance to unburden your heart. Talk to your Pastor, counselor, friend or relative.
        - Write about it. I personally have done a lot of journaling to work out ancient history that I was unwilling to let go of.

Don't let the past destroy your present with those who should be closest to you.

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives,
and especially for members of his household,
he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8 ESV

“Behold, everyone who uses proverbs
will use this proverb about you:
‘Like mother, like daughter.’

Honor your parents

There are several bible verses that reiterate "honor your father and your mother." (See Deut 5:16 & 27:16, Ep 6:1-3, Ex 20:12, and Matt 15:4). In the old testament, the punishment for those who didn't was death.
It sickens me when I hear people speak disrespectfully to their parents. I can't know how that parent treated the person while they were growing up, and maybe that plays a part in it, but to always be mean and rude to the parent, even after the child has grown up and moved out, just seems revengeful and unnecessary. If there are old wounds, communicate with your parents and work things out. It's time to heal.
One person, in particular, we'll call him Mike, is 30 years old. Whenever he's on the phone with his mom, he sounds irritated and he's rude to her. He clearly has no respect for her.
Mike's dad knows what's going on and does nothing about it. He told Mike not to come around anymore, but that was about the extent of his involvement, and Mike, of course, disregarded what his father told him and goes over to visit anyway. Mike's dad caters to him and allows Mike to speak disrespectfully to him, also. This isn't just minor rudeness; this is obviously a lifetime of the child being spoiled, forever getting everything he wanted. Even though his parents have catered to him his whole life, he doesn't see it that way. He sees it like he's owed their respect and support, but he doesn't need to reciprocate. I couldn't even imagine feeling like that. When people are around Mike and see how he treats his parents, they lose respect for him because it emits such a sickening feeling; you just don't treat your parents that way. It is so wrong. If you are like Mike, please consider making amends with your parents before it's too late. Honor your father and your mother.

For anyone who curses his father or his mother
shall surely be put to death;
he has cursed his father or his mother;
his blood is upon him.
Leviticus 20:9 ESV

Pray for your parents

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV

It was my intent to write my usual long(er) Monday post, but the dog got sick last night and I have some cleaning up to do before my mom sees it. I'll catch up with you tomorrow. Have a blessed day.

God is my rock

He said:
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.

The God of Comfort

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble
with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,
so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

Thank a soldier

Image by Robert Pender from Pixabay

Memorial Day should be a reminder to us to take every opportunity throughout the year
to thank a Veteran or someone currently serving.

Who do you want to thank?

The name of the righteous is used in blessings,
but the name of the wicked will rot.

Serve with humility

Image by John Hain from Pixabay
I only know one soldier well enough to understand his drive and ambition, but I've spoken to other soldiers enough to know that my friend's outlook on his duties and purpose are exactly like theirs. They do whatever is required of them. They take their responsibilities very seriously and their work ethic is impeccable. Just think where we'd be without our military. I'm in complete awe of them and wish I could be as giving and serving. Whenever my husband saw a veteran at a restaurant, he would discreetly pay for their meal as an act of gratitude. Thank a soldier today.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
not looking to your own interests but
each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4 NIV

You don't need to be in the military to do this. In everything we do, we should do for others as servants of Christ. They will see us as Christians and our acts will glorify God.

Memorial Day 2019

Image by Jackie Williamson from Pixabay
It's a very special person who decides to join the military. Someone full of love and pride for their country; someone who wants to protect the rights and freedoms of complete strangers, unselfishly sacrificing their safety and sometimes their life.
Photo taken along S. Dixie Drive Vandalia, OH
This Memorial Day, remember to honor those who serve and have served. Thank them for their service. Let them know that we as civilians are grateful and that we remember them in our prayers.

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father,
younger men as brothers,
older women as mothers,
younger women as sisters,
in all purity.

Retirement age

I've been told by nearly everyone I know who has retired, that it isn't what it's cracked up to be. People get bored quickly and miss the comradery of co-workers and clients. They miss having somewhere to go every day, and they miss being needed. So many people identify with their job that when that job is gone, they lose their identity and essentially, they lose themselves.

Here, in the U.S., it seems like there is no time or patience to deal with the older generations. Fifty years old is considered (even if it's just jokingly) "over the hill." When sixty-five was set as the official age of retirement, it seemed to set a standard by which to gauge a person's abilities. Once you're sixty-five, it's your time to retire, whether you want to or not; you're no longer useful in the workplace. I think it's influenced how society looks at the capabilities of anyone over sixty-five. Is it really the best fit for our seniors to be greeters at Walmart?

My parents are eighty-years-old and their faculties are still pretty sharp. It's funny (kind of)...if I'm talking to my dad, he'll tell me something that my mom said that makes him worry about her mind. If I'm talking to my mom, she'll confide in me that Dad forgot something she supposedly told him repeatedly. As far as I can see, their minds are at least as good as mine.

My final sentiment is this. Treasure the older members of your family, friends, and neighbors. Somehow find the time to visit, or call, or at least drop them a card so they know that someone is thinking about them. What I hate more than anything is people who are disrespectful, even angry, who don't help when asked all because the senior in their life is having trouble remembering things and it's frustrating. These same people will then cry and mourn and grieve when that person passes away. Don't wait until then to show you loved someone. It's meaningless after the fact.

Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.
Psalm 71:9 ESV
