Waging war

We can't fight our spiritual battles the same way we do our physical ones. We need special weaponry, like the full armor of God described in Ephesians 6. Take a moment to read the commentary for 2 Corinthians 10 by clicking here.
     On a more personal note, when I feel overwhelmed in spiritual warfare, I pray about it, asking for guidance and endurance. I try to listen for God's direction and also research what the Bible says about what I'm going through. 
     So, if I'm having trouble not hating someone, I can google, "what does the bible say about hatred?" I usually end up clicking on the openbible link, and the first verse is usually the most relevant. In this example, it's 1 John 4:20 which says, "If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen." This makes me realize that hate separates us from God.
     Whatever your spiritual battle, don't just endure it. Pray about it. Talk to someone whom you can trust. Delve into scripture. Trust in God. You will come out of the battle triumphant.

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

This present darkness

It's Sunday night and I'm "preparing" for a colonoscopy (if you get my drift) Monday morning. I've also spent the last several hours researching the Bible for topics for this week that I wanted to do. Absolutely nothing was coming to me as far as who or what we would be praying for exactly, just these miscellaneous topics. 
     Finally, I gave in, relinquished command, and asked God what He wanted us to pray for and it all just came pouring in...the words are flowing, the bible verses make perfect sense; you'd think I'd learn by now to just check in with God first on all matters, all decisions, but no - I have to try to do things my way.
     Thankfully, He is a loving Father, full of goodness and grace and He waits for me to come around. This week we'll be praying for those who are overcome in spiritual warfare. It may be someone who's struggling with sin, a vice such as drinking, or it may be someone who's drowning in self-doubt about their salvation. It could be someone who's enduring a bad relationship because Satan has put a wedge between them and closed the lines of communication. Whatever it is, they need our prayers. If you can't think of anyone right now, pray for the ones going through this whom you don't know, and for the people in my three examples; they represent friends and acquaintances.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV

Love in truth

Knowing will set you free

 

I think most of us know this passage, but to understand how the truth will set us free, we need to read the whole passage:

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Know the word of truth

This is why I like to look at more than one version of the Bible, especially if I'm unclear about something... For this particular verse (1 Timothy 2:15), the NKJV says, "Be diligent..." but the ESV says, "Do your best..." Those two phrases don't denote the same amount of urgency (IMO).
     My husband is always saying, "The best way to recognize error is to know truth." He's heard that saying from various sources, and I've personally taken it to heart. When I think back to all of the misconceptions and just flat-out wrong biblical "interpretations" that I've believed in the past, it really upsets me. I had a hard time understanding the bible and so I just took people's word about what it meant. It turns out they were wrong. Maybe they didn't understand it either.
     Several years ago, my husband got me a John MacArthur Study Bible, and introduced me to commentaries. I attend a church that is focused on preaching from the Bible, verse by verse and so I'm learning now. I was biblically illiterate and I wasn't alone. Too many Christians don't take the time to read and study the Bible. It's God's guidebook for how to live our life here on Earth, and how to know we'll spend eternity with Him.
     When I was growing up, it was a "thing" for people to try "find" themselves. Everything they were searching for is in the Bible. Why am I here? What's the meaning of life? How can I find true peace? True love? True joy? It's all in there.
     Don't let the quantity of your biblical knowledge prevent you from sharing the gospel, though. You can comfortably and honestly share your testimony. If you're asked a question that you don't know the answer to, don't guess, just say you'll find out and get back to them.
     I don't mean to sound preachy, but this emphasis on "truth" has come up so many times over the past few weeks that I felt compelled to share it with you, and for us to pray about it. In my mind, truth leads to trust. We're less inclined to listen to someone who constantly lies than we are to someone who we can trust to be honest with us. 
- Know truth and speak truth.
- Be confident in your belief. 
- Share your testimony. 
- Study scripture.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, 
a worker who does not need to be ashamed, 
rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, 
a worker who has no need to be ashamed, 
rightly handling the word of truth.

Want to get to heaven?

When I think about all of the children of the world who are being abused, it just crushes my heart. Please, if you see something, say something.

Let them know they're loved

Let's continue to pray for the children of the world. Pray that they come to know Jesus and His great love for them. 
     One way to get the message out is through Operation Christmas Child. When the children receive a shoebox, it's not just toys they receive, but they're also presented with the gospel. Let a child know that not only does God love them, but that also, a stranger, from another country is thinking about them and praying for them.


You are a hiding place for me; 
you preserve me from trouble; 
you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah

Pandemic and children

While adults everywhere are complaining and bemoaning having to wear masks, and that their freedoms are being restricted, we should stop and consider how this pandemic is affecting our children and the children around the world who don't have it so easy to begin with. 

Consider this data:
- This is a universal crisis and, for some children, the impact will be lifelong.

-It is pushing more households into multidimensional poverty

-Approximately 150 million additional children are living in multidimensional poverty – without access to essential services

-Up to 1.6 billion children and young people have been affected by school closures – many do not have Internet access at home

-An additional 1.2 million children and 56,700 mothers could die in 6 months due to disruption in basic interventions, based on the worst-case scenario

-As many as 132 million people may go hungry in 2020, of that 36 million children And ...

370 million children may miss out on nutritious school meals

-Due to COVID-19 measures, approximately 80 million children under the age of 1 in at least 68 countries may miss out on receiving life-saving vaccines

-An additional 124,000 children could be infected with HIV if prevention services are disrupted for 6 months

Pray for the children

Pray for the children of the world. This pandemic is affecting people all over the globe. Many see it as a time of pre-tribulation. It creates a sense of urgency to save as many souls as possible and to care for those who cannot help themselves.
     If you've been with me over the years, you know I'm a big proponent of Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan's Purse.

Where's your treasure?

I just read the news headlines because I'm news-fatigued nowadays and so that's about the best I can do. This morning, one, in particular, caught my attention. It was a Bloomberg article titled: "The 50 richest Americans are worth as much as the poorest 165 million". That is just mind-boggling. I can't even get my head around that. Then, I was choosing a bible verse for today and came across this one from 1 Timothy:
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

It made me wish someone would do the research to let us know how many of those 50 richest Americans are storing up treasure in Heaven? It would make me feel better to know that they are doing good works for the Kingdom. Not that it's any of my business or anything, but still...I think about these things. God provides us with what we need so I can't help but wonder about those who have excess, ... is Satan providing them with earthly treasure to distract them from Jesus? Maybe that's why Jesus said:
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go 
through the eye of a needle than for a 
rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
Matthew 19:24 ESV

Life of discontent

In yesterday's post, I want to clarify that it's understandable for someone who's poor to focus on money. In our society, it's extremely difficult to get by without it. What happened though, with my husband and me, was that inability to be satisfied with what we did have.
     I can't help but put a lot of the blame on him, my husband because he couldn't hold down a job, yet he loved to shop. My part in the blame was trying to make it so that he could have everything he wanted. I'm the one who allowed us to get buried in debt. If I hadn't been afraid to stand up to him, I would have shown him our income and our expenses and I should have left it to him to work out. If hindsight were foresight..., and woulda, shoulda, coulda...
     All of that is in the past and he's gone now so I hate to blame him, but I also want any who read this to know I understand the struggles of being poor. However, now I know that had I put forth as much effort in prayer as I put into finding ways to make more money, and had I paid tithes and helped those less fortunate than myself, that God would've helped me. He would have guided me, encouraged me, shown me the way. I never ever asked Him. I quit praying years before that and just basically tried to live my life without Him. That's exactly the same time that my life turned around for the worse.
     Because I was saved, He did help me, though; I didn't realize it was Him, at the time. God dug us out of debt several times and helped us get back on our feet, but since we didn't seek His direction, we just kept making the same mistakes over and over again.
     It wasn't until I reconnected with God and turned my focus on Him that my life turned around for the better.

Keep your life free from love of money, 
and be content with what you have, f
or he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 ESV

Love of money

This verse was mentioned yesterday during Bible Study, and although I've heard it many, many times, it finally hit me that maybe part of the reason I didn't search for God during my first marriage is because I was always pursuing money.
     We didn't have much and so I was always trying to find the get-rich-quick scheme. I was kind of the female, real-life version of Ralph Kramden and Fred Flintstone. The next opportunity was just around the corner. Our credit cards were always maxed out and we could barely afford the minimum payment each month. It was a hopeless, no-win situation. Whenever something did happen that allowed us to pay off our debt, we would just start the whole process all over again. Part of that was wanting to live beyond our means. We coveted what others had, mostly vacations. Instead of being content with what we had, we always "needed" more.
     The energy and effort spent craving and pursuing money would be better spent on Jesus. He provides for our needs. When we put all of our faith in money, we are really worshipping an idol.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Faith from hearing

I have been so encouraged these past few days (prayer works!), not necessarily in seeing any of these children come to salvation, although I have faith and am thoroughly convinced that God will choose them to come to Him, and they will accept the free gift of salvation. My encouragement has been in sharing. 
     This past week, whenever an opening came up, even if it wasn't clear cut, it seemed like God gave me the exact words to say. I'm sure He's done that in the past, but I have usually chickened out, or been nervous to the point that my words came out sounding weak and without conviction. So I have acted on all of these impulses this week and do you know what happened??? Most of the time, it started a conversation. A few times, it didn't; there was just dead silence. But what I've built up in my mind, I guess what I've feared ... being met with anger and resentment, has not happened. I guess when we listen to God, things work out positively for His good and for His glory.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:17 ESV

Our household

Today's verses, if taken out of context might give us the false hope that if one of us believes and is saved, then our entire household is also saved. But, we can't look at scripture as isolated verses (even though, argumentably, that's what I'm doing here. Rest assured, I check out the context before posting (most of the time.)). I do feel like this can give us hope, though. Peter went into a Roman's home, which just wasn't done back then, because he was called to share the gospel with Cornelius, the centurion, and his entire household. 
he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’
Acts 11:14 ESV

     All who were in Cornelius' household, wife, children, servants, guests, etc. heard the gospel and were saved. Likewise, we can hope that all of those in our household have heard the gospel and will, at some point, believe. If we've been bold in our task of sharing the gospel, we know they've heard it. If we haven't been, let's pray for the opportunity and encouragement to do so.
     Later, Paul and Silas were in prison and one night they were singing hymns and praying. There was an earthquake and all of the cell doors were opened, and the prisoners' chains were loosed. When the guard awoke and saw this, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because a guard who allowed his prisoners to escape would have been humiliated and then killed. Paul cried out to him to stop. They hadn't escaped; they were all still there. The guard fell to his knees before Paul and Silas and then brought them out. 
Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Acts 16:30-31 ESV

     Roman guards and their families were saved. Paul, of all people, was saved. Never give up praying that our children will someday also be saved. God is good.
