Genesis 18:19

For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”
Genesis 18:19 ESV

Please continue to pray for Donnie and his family. They ask for "peace and comfort and a peaceful transition to Glory with our Heavenly Father."

Please join me this week in praying for family. Pray that relationships will be strengthened. Also, pray that families will work out any differences that they have and that they will build a bond that can withstand any tribulation. Let's add to this prayer that our Heavenly Father help lead our unsaved relatives to salvation; that He help them in whatever area of their personality that separates them from others (anger, fear, language, narcissism, physical or mental restrictions, etc...) so they may form lasting relationships which will lead them to You.

Inherit the wind

Image by Jan Mallander from Pixabay

Please continue to pray for Donnie and his family. They ask for "peace and comfort and a peaceful transition to Glory with our Heavenly Father."

***

"Inherit the Wind" is a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee which got its title from today's Bible verse, Proverbs 11:29 (I'm quoting from the ESV. They used the KJV back then):

Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.

David Guzik, from EnduringWord.com, wrote, "To bring trouble to one’s own family is to prepare a future full of storm and difficulty. To inherit the wind is to have a future of storm and trouble."

How often do we make decisions that ultimately bring "storm and difficulty" to our households? How often are those decisions made out of anger, or spite, or haste? It could be a harsh word or an overt action; either of which has the power to fester and manifest into something that's seemingly impossible to overcome. Pray about anything that has come between you and someone else. I encourage you to make amends.

Praying and relationships

This Bible verse showed up in my search for Bible verses about family so I looked it up on enduringword.com. People sometimes ask, 'who do we pray to?', meaning to God, or to Jesus. My thought was always that we pray to the Father (Luke 11:2) but pray in Jesus' name as Christ tells us to do (John 14:13). I realized that I forget about the Holy Spirit sometimes (Romans 8:26). David Guzik wrote about Ephesians 3:14-15:
To the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Paul directed his prayer to the Father, who is presented as the “planner” among the members of the Trinity. In the Bible, prayer is usually directed to the Father, through the Son, by the empowering and direction of the Holy Spirit.
The Living God is our Father; we are all His children, therefore we are all brothers and sisters. It is my prayer that we treat each other with love and kindness as brothers and sisters should.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
Ephesians 3:14-15 ESV

There is no update on Donnie; please continue in prayer for him and his family.

Unity

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good
and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
Psalm 133:1 ESV

Update on Donnie - they've called in Hospice. Please be in continued prayer. I'm personally praying for a miracle, but also, more realistically, praying that God holds onto Donnie's family and embraces them with all of His love and comfort. It's bringing back a flood of memories for me, sitting with my first husband, then years later, sitting with my dad while Hospice did their thing. They are truly a blessing.
Pray without ceasing.

Pray for odd relatives

Image by mohamed Hassan from Pixabay
We may only have this short time on earth to walk with certain individuals because once we pass, not everyone will be going to Heaven. It's sad and depressing to think about and we don't like to discuss it, but it's reality. Make the most of this time together and try to lead those you love to Christ. Always be Christlike in their presence. Pray for them.
We all have relatives that we think are a little odd, and ones that we even believe are hopeless. We have relatives that just plain rub us the wrong way.* If we're being honest, do we not tend to avoid those family members? What if instead, we prayed for them? What if we also prayed for our own hearts to be softened toward them? I've seen amazing transformations happen by doing this. Let's incorporate these requests into our prayers this week and see what a difference it can make.

*To any of my relatives reading this, I'm not talking about you <3

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8 ESV

Please continue to pray for Donnie and Amanda. Their daughter wrote this prayer Monday:
Lord, we come to you with open hearts and hands- Lord please remove the toxins and swelling from Dad's body. Lord, you’re the ultimate healer and he is here to fight this battle. Lord, please give him the strength to fight this through and move this almighty mountain. Allow him to return home to us for these grandbabies, his children, his wife, and our community. Lord, allow him to be rebuilt from the inside out and do your work on this earth longer. If anyone can heal him lord it’s you. Amen.

Family is a blessing

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Psalm 128:3 ESV

"The interesting thing about these two images, vines and olive plants, is that they are biblical symbols of the abundant life. They are not food staples like wheat or corn. They symbolize rich blessing.” (James Montgomery Boice, 1968)

“The vine and the olive are two of the best fruits…both together implying that a great part of a man’s temporal happiness consisteth in having a good wife and children.” (John Trapp, 1600s)
Words aren't coming to me this morning, but I came across this Bible verse which stated perfectly what is on my heart. Any of us who have family are truly blessed. What we do, how we handle those relationships is entirely up to us.

Please continue to pray for Donnie and Amanda. Their daughter wrote this prayer yesterday:
Lord, we come to you with open hearts and hands- Lord please remove the toxins and swelling from Dad's body. Lord, you’re the ultimate healer and he is here to fight this battle. Spirit of adoption

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

The vulnerable

Image by Joel McGInley from Pixabay

We aren't all called to adopt, but there are ways which we can help vulnerable children in other countries get the necessities of life and learn about Christ. (If you know of a program in the U.S., please share it with me).

These are just a few programs that I and/or my husband have personally been involved with*:
helps care for the orphans in the Dominican Republic. There seems to be an overabundance of orphans there.
reaches the poorest children in the Philippines and also helps feed the surrounding area residents.
has numerous programs to help people all over the world, but also offers a program to sponsor a child.

And the King will answer them,
‘Truly, I say to you,
as you did it to one of the
least of these my brothers and sisters,
you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:40 ESV

The fatherless

Image by StockSnap from Pixabay people-258733

Yesterday, while listing the people of the Bible who were adopted, I completely forgot about Esther who was adopted by her cousin Mordecai. Some Bible versions say "uncle", but mine says "his uncle’s daughter" which is a cousin.
And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman was lovely and beautiful. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.
Esther 2:7 NKJV

Like Moses, Esther saved God's people, her people.
I never looked at it that way before, that the four people of the bible who were adopted, were such key people in God's plan. Adoption is obviously important to our Father since it's mentioned or talked about so often in the Bible, and even becomes the terminology associated with our salvation. In the Old Testament, it doesn't say "adoption" specifically, but it often talks about taking care of the fatherless.

He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow,
and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.
Deuteronomy 10:18 NKJV

We'll talk about spiritual adoption in a day or two.

If there's anyone you would like us to pray for this week, please let me know.

Pray for the adopted

Image by Tanya Patxot from Pixabay

I have to be totally honest with you and say that I know nothing about being adopted or about adopting a child, but I'm hoping someone may have a story or testimony to share. God put on my heart for us to pray for not only the adopted, but also foster children, stepchildren, and the parents who raise them.
Two of my dearest friends have adopted daughters (late teens to early 30s) and just happen to be going through some struggles with them right now. None of the conflicts are because they're adopted, but between that and the Pastor talking about how we're all adopted into our Father's family, it seemed like a group we should focus our prayers on this week.
This is obviously a topic dear to our Lord because look at the people in the Bible who fit into this "category"...Moses, Samuel, and Jesus. Moses was adopted by Pharoah's daughter. Hannah surrendered Samuel to Eli. Jesus' true Father is Yahweh, but He was also the step-son of Joseph.
And then there's us. We who are God's children are adopted. More on that later.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1:3-6 NKJV

Before you were born

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
My husband will notice people's nametags wherever we go and greet them by name. So, to the cashier at the grocery, the waitress, the teller,...he'll say something like, "Good morning, Judy! What a beautiful name! Did you know that God knew your name even before you were born?"
I admire his ability to share God and the gospel with everyone. He seems to do it so easily and so smoothly. When I've commented about it, he tells me that, 'you just have to look for an opening.' He also tells me that it gets easier with practice.
This particular introduction is especially wonderful because it lets people know that they are special, unique, and loved by God, the Creator who knew them even before they were conceived. While we aren't all appointed prophets to the nations like Jeremiah, I feel like the Bible verse is still relevant to all of us because we're all to share the Good News everywhere we go, therefore we are all God's messengers.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and
before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV

Please join me this week in praising God for sending His only Son and allowing us to share in that experience through the teachings of the Gospels (See Luke 2:1-7). Praise Him for all of the new lives He brought into this world in 2020 and for giving us that 'breath of fresh air' when we needed it most. Let us pray for the health and welfare of all of those born this year and their families. May they dwell on the joy and miracle and blessings of new life.

Fearfully and wonderfully made

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
Psalm 139:13-16 ESV

I came across Charles Spurgeon's commentary of these verses: “If we are marvelously wrought upon even before we are born, what shall we say of the Lord’s dealings with us after we quit his secret workshop, and he directs our pathway through the pilgrimage of life? What shall we not say of that new birth which is even more mysterious than the first, and exhibits even more the love and wisdom of the Lord.”

The miracle of life

Amid all of the illness and the unprecedented number of lives lost in a single year, there have been many, many blessings of babies being born. Every time I heard of a birth, ... it's kind of hard to describe the feeling - almost like a breath of fresh air; a brief moment of calm, of normalcy.
I thought during this week of celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour, we might pray for all of the babies born this year and remember how blessed we are to have such a loving and merciful Creator to watch over us and guide us through this life. He knows each one of us intimately, even each hair on our heads. He has a plan for our lives.
Even among death, life continues and is renewed, just as even among graves, flowers bloom.
I found this bible verse which I must have read many times, but it never stuck out in my mind as a 'wow' kind of thing until today. I've been blessed to give birth twice, and aside from the effect of accelerated hormones, it's really an emotional experience. On one hand, I had this human being growing inside of me and that's its own miracle. On the other hand, I was anxious for the child to be born - anxious as in, couldn't wait, but also in nervous about how she would change my life and uncertain if I was up for the challenge. There was also the anxiety of childbirth - because of the curse, it is extremely painful, but we forget the pain. If we didn't, we would never have more than one child.

When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come,
but when she has delivered the baby,
she no longer remembers the anguish,
for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
John 16:21 ESV

What love is

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Please continue to pray for the healing of family members and their relationships and for these specific prayer requests:
- that daughter R soften her heart toward her mother.

- that daughter R not feel alone in a house filled with family.
- that relationships are strengthened in the M household, and mended in the G household.
- for peace and comfort for everyone who has lost a family member this past year.
- that a married couple becomes "one flesh" as promised in Genesis. The wife feels they are more like roommates than soulmates. Her husband, C is either unable or unwilling to show her love.

- please pray for C.O. and family who just lost a brother to covid, and M.G. and family who just lost an aunt to covid. Also, pray for wife C who has just been hospitalized with covid and her husband who has it also and is home alone recuperating.

If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother,
he is a liar;
for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen,
how can he love God whom he has not seen?
1 John 4:20 ESV

Inherit only wind

Whoever brings ruin on their family
will inherit only wind, and the
fool will be servant to the wise.
Proverbs 11:29

Please continue to pray for the healing of family relationships this week, whether it's a need for reconciliation, forgiveness, healing, grieving. If you know of anyone specifically for us to pray for, let me know their first initials, or just their relationship, so that we can pray for them also.
Please pray
- that daughter R soften her heart toward her mother.
- that daughter J reach out to her father.
- please pray for D and family.
