For whatever was written in former days
was written for our instruction,
that through endurance and
through the encouragement of the Scriptures
we might have hope.

Faith from hearing the Gospel

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. ...

Anything's possible

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;
for assuredly, I say to you,
if you have faith as a mustard seed,
you will say to this mountain,
Move from here to there,’ and it will move;
and nothing will be impossible for you.
However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Faith is a gift from God

Image by Michael Schwarzenberger from Pixabay
I believe that God hears my prayers and answers all of my prayers; sometimes 'yes', sometimes 'no' and always in His time and not mine. When we pray for the salvation of the unsaved, He hears our pleas. George Muller prayed every single day for a handful of people to be saved and as they came to faith, he prayed for additional people. Every single person he prayed for came to faith, except for one (if I'm remembering the story correctly). I look at some people and think they're an impossible cause because of their convictions, but then I remember Saul. If God can convert Saul (Paul), then He can convert anyone.
People come to Christ by hearing the Gospel, so be a messenger for God, but also pray for those who aren't saved and see what a difference it makes.

For by grace you have been saved through faith.
And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Ephesians 2:8 ESV

Seek Faith

Think of all of the people in the Old Testament who communicated and interacted directly with God.
Now think of all of the people in the Old Testament who, even though they knew without a doubt that God existed, they still disobeyed. It's the same group of people: Adam and Eve's fall, Cain killed Abel, the people of the Exodus made a golden idol and complained constantly, and still, God took them to the promised land. When they got there, the majority of them didn't have faith that God would deliver the land to them.
Can you imagine doing these things in the presence of God?
Yet we, too, stand in the presence of God and blatantly disobey every single day. How can we who do have faith in Him testify to those who don't?
I believe it's our sinful nature that allows us to show the world the true meaning of the Gospel. We're human. We sin and make mistakes, yet we believe that God forgives us because of the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us on the cross. God loves to see our faith in Him. It's not enough to say "I believe". We have to surrender to Him completely and put our lives in His hands.
I've learned this the hard way. Whenever I try to act on my own, things don't go well. I'm now starting to learn to take everything to Him in prayer and ask for His will to be done, not mine. I ask Him what should I do about this situation or that and I am learning to wait patiently for the answer.
Sadly, it's not only non-believers who lack faith, but many believers seem to, also.

And without faith it is impossible to please him,
for whoever would draw near to God
must believe that he exists and
that he rewards those who seek him.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV

Faith gives us hope

Image by Arek Socha from Pixabay
Everyone has faith in something or someone; we have faith that the sun will rise each morning and set each evening. We have faith that our family and friends love us unconditionally. We have faith that the earth will sustain us. We have faith that things will continue on as they have always been yet we understand that change happens. You could substitute "hope" for each occurrence of the word "faith" because our faith is based on what we hope for. We hope for that which we haven't (yet) seen. Hebrews 11:1 tells us this:
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

So why do unbelievers insist they need to see God in order to believe in Him? They believe in the unseen every single day. Without faith, there is no hope, especially the ultimate hope of eternal life. Our faith (and hope) should rest in Jesus.

Our Father in Heaven

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
As we wrap up the week praying for our parents and guardians, let's give praise to Our Father in Heaven who knew us even before we were conceived.

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

Let go of the past

Just as your parents raised you and saw to your needs and loved you, you are called to reciprocate. I've known parents who made a lot of terrible, seemingly unforgivable mistakes (not mine; mine are awesome and my brother and I both feel super blessed to have been born to them).
Events, situations, experiences of the past may still weigh on your heart and you feel incapable of forgiving the offending family member, but you do have the capacity to do so. You just need to find the way.
        - Pray about it. Ask God to soften your heart.
        - Talk about it. It's difficult to talk openly about something that causes you pain, so find someone you can trust completely, even if they only listen. It's a chance to unburden your heart. Talk to your Pastor, counselor, friend or relative.
        - Write about it. I personally have done a lot of journaling to work out ancient history that I was unwilling to let go of.

Don't let the past destroy your present with those who should be closest to you.

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives,
and especially for members of his household,
he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8 ESV

Honor your parents

There are several bible verses that reiterate "honor your father and your mother." (See Deut 5:16 & 27:16, Ep 6:1-3, Ex 20:12, and Matt 15:4). In the old testament, the punishment for those who didn't was death.
It sickens me when I hear people speak disrespectfully to their parents. I can't know how that parent treated the person while they were growing up, and maybe that plays a part in it, but to always be mean and rude to the parent, even after the child has grown up and moved out, just seems revengeful and unnecessary. If there are old wounds, communicate with your parents and work things out. It's time to heal.
One person, in particular, we'll call him Mike, is 30 years old. Whenever he's on the phone with his mom, he sounds irritated and he's rude to her. He clearly has no respect for her.
Mike's dad knows what's going on and does nothing about it. He told Mike not to come around anymore, but that was about the extent of his involvement, and Mike, of course, disregarded what his father told him and goes over to visit anyway. Mike's dad caters to him and allows Mike to speak disrespectfully to him, also. This isn't just minor rudeness; this is obviously a lifetime of the child being spoiled, forever getting everything he wanted. Even though his parents have catered to him his whole life, he doesn't see it that way. He sees it like he's owed their respect and support, but he doesn't need to reciprocate. I couldn't even imagine feeling like that. When people are around Mike and see how he treats his parents, they lose respect for him because it emits such a sickening feeling; you just don't treat your parents that way. It is so wrong. If you are like Mike, please consider making amends with your parents before it's too late. Honor your father and your mother.

For anyone who curses his father or his mother
shall surely be put to death;
he has cursed his father or his mother;
his blood is upon him.

Pray for your parents

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV

Mind your elders

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” ...

Where shall I go?

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
Psalm 139:7 ESV

It's impossible to hide from the Lord. If you're trying to isolate yourself from Him because you know that you're following your desires instead of the Holy Spirit, it's pointless, because He sees you and it grieves Him. No matter what's going on in your life, God is there; through the good and the bad. Stay in the fellowship of your church family. Church family, reach out to those who have wandered away.

Isolation

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay
A few days after moving into the dorm, I was waiting for the elevator on my floor when a voice called out to me from the room next to the elevator. There was a young woman sitting on her bed reading the Bible. Her room happened to be a single, and I was a bit envious. She didn't like not having a roommate, but I thought it would be ideal. I liked to have my own private space and a chance to be alone. I didn't mind being isolated. She preferred to be around people and often kept her door open so she could see everyone passing by.
We talked for a while; the normal introductory chit-chat: what's your major, what year are you, where are you from? It turned out we were both from the same area and she attended church about ten minutes from my house. She invited me to go to her church with her the next time I went home. For some reason, I hemmed and hawed. That's when I realized I hadn't packed my Bible to take to college which was really strange. I figured it was just all of the excitement of moving away and being on my own, but I hadn't even realized it, which means I hadn't thought about reading it since I got there.
I found myself avoiding this young woman even though we seemed to have a lot in common and she was really friendly. She went home every weekend, but I never asked her for a ride. I was deliberately avoiding her because she was always in the Word, always sharing her faith and I knew I was slipping away from mine.
All of my dreams and expectations of getting out on my own, going to college, living in a big city were falling apart. Even then, I didn't go to God in prayer. I was isolating myself from Him, the church, the church family. I don't know why and I don't even know when or how it happened exactly. It was gradual and there were many opportunities to go back, but my desires were becoming stronger than my faith and I couldn't pursue those desires and continue in the faith because I knew, deep down, that they were displeasing to God.
We need to encourage our young people to keep returning to church so they are surrounded by loving, caring Christians. We need to provide a way for them to remain engaged with the church and still give them the extra time and space they need to adjust to whatever their new normal is. I think this can be done easily by following up with each individual, planning get-togethers around their schedules and allowing them to minister and be ministered to by the church family.
There are so many introverts like me who just want to be alone most of the time, which is fine, but it's extremely important to come out of isolation and interact with our Christian family on a regular basis. Reach out to someone in isolation, a recent graduate who may be tempted to pursue desires during this important transitional period of their lives.

Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;
he breaks out against all sound judgment.

Meet together

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.
Hebrews 10:24-27 ESV

Going away to college

Image by Nikolay Georgiev from Pixabay
I moved to Cincinnati at the end of August 1981. Like many 18-year-olds, it was my first time on my own. I was there to pursue a degree in Interior Design and to take advantage of everything a big city had to offer: theater, art galleries, fine restaurants,... I had every intention of looking for a church either on campus or nearby, but not that first week. The first week was busy meeting people, learning my way around, and setting up my dorm room. It was so exciting being on my own, being an adult, being able to make my own decisions and go and do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted.

Within the first few days of school starting, reality was setting in. I had to find a job through the work-study program, buy all of my art supplies, and figure out how to carry them back and forth from one end of campus to the other. (My dorm and college couldn't have been further apart.) Most of my professors seemed like crotchety old men who were so burned out dealing with 18-year-olds that they were just going through the motions awaiting retirement, or maybe even death. They loved comparing college to Disneyland and real life (after college) was hell.

It turned out that my campus job only paid me once a month and I was only able to work up to 20 hours a week. At $3.15 an hour, the paycheck was often gone within a week of cashing it. So, the theater, art galleries, and fine restaurants weren't happening.

I had to buy and register a can of mace and take a self-defense class or two because the campus wasn't located in the safest part of town and my mid-western, smallish town upbringing couldn't possibly prepare me for that kind of culture shock. By the end of week 2, I was seeking out the other ten or so people from my high school who were attending there and setting up rides with them to go home as often as possible.

My weekends at home were mostly spent catching up on sleep and laundry, so there wasn't any time or energy for church and it was pointless to find a church in Cincinnati because I wouldn't have the time or energy to go there either; I'd be scared walking around off campus and I didn't want to go alone.

I believe some of these factors are the same for our teenagers today. Going from high school to college (or starting a fulltime job, or joining the military) is a drastic change in their daily lives and without incorporating church attendance and ministry from the beginning they may come to believe that it no longer fits into their schedules or their lives.

We as the church need to keep them engaged and active while allowing them the flexibility to make it part of their new young adult life in a way that works for them and still glorifies God.

Let's pray for the 2019 graduates that they stay with the church during this transitional time of their lives and that God guides us how best to lead and encourage them toward a godly adult life.

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Matthew 18:20 ESV

2019 Graduates

Image by mohamed Hassan from Pixabay
We need to pray for our recent graduates; not only for their transition into the next stage of their lives (college, workforce, military) but also that they remain in the church.

An article on Lifeway Research's website* states that, "The dropout rate for young adults accelerates with age, the study found.
While 69 percent say they were attending at age 17, that fell to 58 percent at age 18 and 40 percent at age 19. Once they reach their 20s, around 1 in 3 say they were attending church regularly."
“We are seeing teenagers drop out of the church as they make the transition out of high school and student ministry,” said the LifeWay's director of student ministry, Ben Trueblood.

This hit home for me. This is when I dropped out of church, and I didn't return until over 30 years later. Those 30 years were horrible and my problems seemed even more unbearable because I wasn't even praying or in the Word during most of that time. It was a time of feeling alone and isolated. Every problem seemed like it was more than I could bear. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. We, as a church, need to find a way to keep our young congregation coming back and support them in finding a new church if they moved away from home.

Just brainstorming a few ideas:
- Parents could visit some churches with their children just as they probably visited the campuses with their teen.
- Get a volunteer or two from the home church to keep in touch with the teen, reminding them to stay in the word.
- Help them find a Christain group to get involved in.

This is really important. Let's not let this generation slip through cracks. Keep them engaged and active in church and in ministry so they can do the same with future generations.

Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock,
in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,
to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
Acts 20:28 ESV

*Earls, Aaron. (January 15, 2019). Most teenagers drop out of church as young adults.

Brookville tornado stories

The Ridge Church Brookville, OH
This is last week's church service recording where the Pastor shares what all transpired during and immediately after a tornado struck Brookville, OH on Memorial Day. It's about half an hour and is then followed by a half hour sermon given by our new Assistant Pastor. I hope you enjoy. I'm so proud of my church and am just heartbroken that I wasn't able to be there with them.

The disciples, as each one was able,
decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters
living in Judea. This they did, sending their gift
to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

Churches all over the region opened their doors to the community. They provided food, shelter, and showers, but they also provided comfort, security, and even hope for those who were without. We are all made in God's image, and it glorifies Him whenever we put our own needs aside to serve others. It's an opportunity to share His word and to let others see Him through us.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
Galatians 6:10a

Cleaning up the rubble

The stories of people giving freely of their time and resources to help the victims of the tornadoes are truly inspirational. There were children who helped their parents take food to the victims, an entire football team who helped removed trees and rubble, adults of all ages, and retirees. Areas that I have to drive through to go to and from work have set up tents and hand out bottles of water, pizzas, and bbq a dinner each evening. The donations have been so plentiful that some distribution centers are having to turn away goods. (So maybe check out where you plan to drop off before buying anything else to donate). If you still want to help financially, you can donate to the Red Cross* https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation.html/
I'm so proud to live in a community and county full of so many giving people. God uses His followers as image-bearers to the world, showing His love, mercy, and grace through us.

I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
John 13:15 (NIV)

Remembering 1974 Xenia tornado

Shoup Mill Rd. May 28, 2019
When I was ten, I took a drawing class. Each week we went to a large house in town that was tucked back in a wooded area where we drew the house and landscaping. We were sitting outside there on a partly cloudy evening, somewhat out of touch with the world, when the sky got suddenly dark. My dad showed up; I didn’t know he even knew where we were drawing. He told everyone there was a tornado headed our way. I wasn’t too frightened because there had been tornado threats before that never materialized, but when we got home Mom was getting stuff together to take to the basement: a radio, some food, pillows and blankets. My parents had never gone that far for a tornado warning before, so then I was scared. The TV was still on in the living room. The emergency broadcast made an ear-piercing sound that stopped us in our tracks. It announced that a tornado had just devastated Xenia, Ohio. It was April 4, 1974.
We drove through Xenia two weeks later on our way to visit my grandparents and it was the most haunting sight I had ever seen. Everything was flattened. I didn’t see any people. There was one large tree still standing, and someone had tied a yellow ribbon around it. I had a sinking, sickening feeling in my stomach; I felt shocked, and empathy. The imagery often kept me awake at night.
I haven't been through every area hit here on Memorial Day, but where I've been, there are people outside working, cleaning up. On that day in 1974, I didn't see any people. The devastation was so great that there was nothing to be done. I've heard that parts of Trotwood are like that. I've heard that many of them didn't have homeowner's insurance. Let's pray that they are able to pick up the pieces of their lives and start anew.
God is our refuge and strength,
 an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
Psalm 46:1-2

Memorial Day tornadoes

As you probably know, Brookville, Trotwood, Harrison Township, Celina and surrounding areas in Ohio were hit by a series of tornados (18 at last count) this past Memorial Day, ranging in force from an EF0 to an EF4. I can't even find the words sufficient to describe the devastation. One life was lost that night.

In our house, we went to the basement grabbing only our purses and watched on a cellphone as it was reported that a tornado was passing over us; it didn't touch down, thankfully. There were other things that I didn't take with me though, that, had we been hit, I would have wanted to have like prescription medicines, water, cellphone charger, batteries, a change of clothing (I had been asleep when they hit), a leash for the dog (I saw a man walking down the street with his dog, using a shirt tied to his dog's collar as a leash); necessary things that we don't think of in a moment of panic. I never prepared for a tornado because we've never had one here. I only remember one other time in my life that we even went to the basement and that was 1974 when the severe weather passed over us and hit Xenia.

We called loved ones to make sure they knew about the tornados, but few took it seriously because it had never happened here before. After this, they will heed the warnings in the future.

How often does God give us advanced warnings and we ignore them? He may not use tornado sirens, news media, and emergency alerts on our cellphones, but He does place things on our hearts and use His followers and His word to communicate with us. We need to open our eyes and our ears to what He is telling us.

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
Psalm 46:1-2 NIV

God is my rock

He said:
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—
from violent people you save me.
“I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and have been saved from my enemies.
2 Samuel 22:2-4 NIV
