Inherit the wind

"Inherit the Wind" is a play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee which got its title from today's Bible verse, Proverbs 11:29 (I'm quoting from the ESV. They used the KJV back then):

Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind, 
and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.

David Guzik, from EnduringWord.com, wrote, "To bring trouble to one’s own family is to prepare a future full of storm and difficulty. To inherit the wind is to have a future of storm and trouble."

How often do we make decisions that ultimately bring "storm and difficulty" to our households? How often are those decisions made out of anger, or spite, or haste? It could be a harsh word or an overt action; either of which has the power to fester and manifest into something that's seemingly impossible to overcome. Pray about anything that has come between you and someone else. I encourage you to make amends.

Praying and relationships

This Bible verse showed up in my search for Bible verses about family so I looked it up on enduringword.com. People sometimes ask, 'who do we pray to?', meaning to God, or to Jesus. My thought was always that we pray to the Father (Luke 11:2) but pray in Jesus' name as Christ tells us to do (John 14:13). I realized that I forget about the Holy Spirit sometimes (Romans 8:26). David Guzik wrote about Ephesians 3:14-15:  
To the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Paul directed his prayer to the Father, who is presented as the “planner” among the members of the Trinity. In the Bible, prayer is usually directed to the Father, through the Son, by the empowering and direction of the Holy Spirit.
The Living God is our Father; we are all His children, therefore we are all brothers and sisters. It is my prayer that we treat each other with love and kindness as brothers and sisters should.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
Ephesians 3:14-15 ESV

There is no update on Donnie; please continue in prayer for him and his family.

Update on Donnie - they've called in Hospice. Please be in continued prayer. I'm personally praying for a miracle, but also, more realistically, praying that God holds onto Donnie's family and embraces them with all of His love and comfort. It's bringing back a flood of memories for me, sitting with my first husband, then years later, sitting with my dad while Hospice did their thing. They are truly a blessing.
Pray without ceasing.

Pray for odd relatives

We may only have this short time on earth to walk with certain individuals because once we pass, not everyone will be going to Heaven. It's sad and depressing to think about and we don't like to discuss it, but it's reality. Make the most of this time together and try to lead those you love to Christ. Always be Christlike in their presence. Pray for them.
     We all have relatives that we think are a little odd, and ones that we even believe are hopeless. We have relatives that just plain rub us the wrong way.* If we're being honest, do we not tend to avoid those family members? What if instead, we prayed for them? What if we also prayed for our own hearts to be softened toward them? I've seen amazing transformations happen by doing this. Let's incorporate these requests into our prayers this week and see what a difference it can make.

But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Please continue to pray for Donnie and Amanda. Their daughter wrote this prayer Monday:
Lord, we come to you with open hearts and hands- Lord please remove the toxins and swelling from Dad's body. Lord, you’re the ultimate healer and he is here to fight this battle. Lord, please give him the strength to fight this through and move this almighty mountain. Allow him to return home to us for these grandbabies, his children, his wife, and our community. Lord, allow him to be rebuilt from the inside out and do your work on this earth longer. If anyone can heal him lord it’s you. Amen.

Mother's Day 2021

 
I was blessed to spend yesterday with my two daughters. We got Submarine House (yay, teezers!(basically, cheesy jalapeno poppers)) and watched Mulan. One of the main themes of the movie was devotion to family.
(While I realize that it highlights eastern religious beliefs, I appreciate the story and what it accomplishes.)
     Sometimes we need what is essentially a children's story to remind us of family values: honoring your father and mother, love and devotion between siblings, sacrifice for one another.
     Earlier that day, someone spoke in church about a woman who was estranged from both her mother and her children. He wondered what Mother's Day must look like, feel like to her. My heart just broke. My mother calls me multiple times a day. She worries about me constantly and stays involved in my life. My daughters and I have a special bond of not only mother-daughter, but also friendship, understanding, openness, love, and devotion. I can't imagine the heartbreak of not having such strong ties with these awesome women.
     If possible, mend any fences with family. If it is not possible; if the abuse or hurt is too much to overcome, then please pray for that family member.

Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching,
Proverbs 1:8 ESV

What love is

 

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Please continue to pray for the healing of family members and their relationships and for these specific prayer requests:
- that daughter R soften her heart toward her mother.
- that daughter J reach out to her father.
- that daughter R not feel alone in a house filled with family.
- that relationships are strengthened in the M household, and mended in the G household. 
- for peace and comfort for everyone who has lost a family member this past year.
- that a married couple becomes "one flesh" as promised in Genesis. The wife feels they are more like roommates than soulmates. Her husband, C is either unable or unwilling to show her love.
- please pray for D and family.
- pray for mother S and daughter R that their relationship is strengthened.
- that relationships in the P family and R families are strengthened.
- pray for better family communication between D and her daughter S.
- please pray for C.O. and family who just lost a brother to covid, and M.G. and family who just lost an aunt to covid. Also, pray for wife C who has just been hospitalized with covid and her husband who has it also and is home alone recuperating.
- please pray for L's FIL.

No hate

 

We've added family members to pray for so please read through the list and lift these brothers and sisters up as we continue to pray for the healing of family relationships this week, whether it's a need for reconciliation, forgiveness, healing, grieving. If you know of anyone specifically for us to pray for, let me know their first initials, or just their relationship, so that we can pray for them also.

Be humble

I need to hang this sign where I can see it every day. It's so easy to get caught up in what I think and feel and so sometimes, I forget (or even worse, dismiss) that others feel just as strongly about their views. I decided to look up the definition of being humble and found this great quote by C.S. Lewis:

I didn't get everything accomplished before today that I had hoped and I have to finish getting ready for my trip, so the rest of the week will simply be Bible Verses, which is okay, but I still feel funny not sharing some of me with you every day. Maybe the internet will work on vacation and I'll be able to add some writing about my little adventure. If not, enjoy the Bible Verses and know that I'm thinking of you <3

God is love

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow afternoon and I'm not sure if I'll have dependable internet, so I'll be preposting the bible verses just to be safe. Unfortunately, I can only schedule on my blog and on facebook, so I pray that those of you who join me through other social media sites will visit my blog
while I'm gone. If I can continue to post links, I will.

Please join me this week in praying for someone struggling in a relationship. It could be a husband and wife, a mother and daughter, a grandparent and grandchild, or two best friends. All relationships are important and significant, but they don't always come easily. Often they take work and compromise and prayer to carry them through.

While looking up bible verses for this week, most of them were about love. At first, I thought, that's not what I'm looking for, but then soon realized that of course, it was. God is all about love. We're to love Him above all else and to love each other as we love ourselves. This encompasses all relationships that we have in this life.

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. 
God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
1 John 4:16 NKJV

Discontentment in relationships

I know a young man, we'll call him "Tim" who is seemingly discontent with his life. His excuse or reason is that he's a single father of two children, a girl, and a boy. 'If only' he would lament. If only I had a wife and a mother for my kids, life would be so much better. His reasoning that his kids need a mother is false because they already have a mother. It's he who needs a woman in his life which is completely understandable except that he goes about it all wrong and never learns from his mistakes. I don't know about his first two wives, but he's divorced from both of them.
     Several years ago, he met a woman with a small child and they hit it off great. He asked her and her baby to move in with him and his two kids after dating for just a month or two. Huge mistake. After a short time, she moved out, but Tim and she continued to date for years and even got engaged. Eventually they had a huge fight and they broke up.
     A few months later, he met someone new and she seemed 'perfect'. He overlooked several obvious red flags (and she did, too) and after about two months, they eloped. She and her two kids moved in and she got pregnant. After just a few months things got to be unbearable and they went through a very messy separation.
     A few months later, Tim met another woman, who was even more perfect. This time, he moved himself and his two kids in with her and her two (or three?) kids after about two months of dating. It wasn't long before she too became pregnant. Things didn't work out and he and his kids had to find a new house.
     So here's a situation where a person is so discontent that he keeps repeating the same action over and over again hoping for a new outcome instead of learning from his mistakes.
     There is no contentment outside of God. Tim needs to pray about what God's plans are for him instead of just rushing in and making these Godless decisions on his own. He needs to consider the consequences of his actions on his children and the other children involved. He needs to slow down, hold off on sex, hold off on cohabitating and marriage. My late husband always used to say "when something seems too good to be true, it usually is." You can't possibly know someone well enough after just a couple of months. When you come to situations like this, it's best to pray and wait for an answer from our Father in Heaven.

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, 
faith, love, and peace, 
along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Walk with the wise - not with fools

This verse evoked so many events from my youth (not that any of MY friends are fools, lol). Standing at the top of Taylorsville Dam, staring down the snow-covered hill, intertube in hand, my friends encouraging me. I did it, and it was fun, but I injured my wrist, and the really foolish thing was I kept on intertubing, I guess to see if I couldn't get hurt a little more. I was so accident prone as a child (okay, if I'm being honest - I'm still accident prone) yet I loved adventure and trying new things. Maybe this was a bad example, but you get it.
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

Encouragement for the lonely

Believers and non-believers alike can suffer from loneliness even though believers know they are never alone, that the Holy Spirit lives within them, and that God will never leave them, nor forsake them. Non-believers may feel an emptiness in their soul and maybe that's their heart telling them that they need to seek God.
No matter what the circumstance is, it's easy to have a short period of feeling alone and then that turn into depression, which can take away one's desire to interact with others. Together all of these feelings can leave one anxious and socially paralyzed. That's why I think it's important to also pray that the person seeks God and be guided by Him to heal and to feel good about their self so they can face their circumstances and have the strength to do something about it. We can't (or at least, shouldn't) live in isolation, and God doesn't want us to. He created us have relationships with one another, to fellowship. He will help us develop those relationships if we ask.

Some bible verses that remind us of God's love and presence:
1 John 1:7 (NKJV)
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

James 4:8a (NKJV)
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

Paul's Prayer is My Prayer

Paul's Prayer for the Ephesians is also my prayer for you:

Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)
I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

I keep reading this passage over and over again and realize what an awesome prayer this is! This is THE PRAYER for what I seek and for what I hope for. He will STRENGTHEN us as believers with POWER through HIS SPIRIT! We are to be ROOTED and established in LOVE.

TOGETHER with ALL the LORD'S HOLY PEOPLE. We are to work together, learn together, and grow and love together. God created us to be in relationships with one another. Through relationships, we can show the world God's love; we can be the image-bearers He intended us to be, and in so doing, bring honor and glory to Him.

Christ's love is immeasurable. To fully be able to GRASP "how wide and long and high and deep" His love is, I believe, we have to let go of the limitation of loving only with one's heart and try to understand a love that fills the entire soul. With Christ's love, we can never be alone; no earthly problem can be too big to handle, there is nothing that Christ can't do. To "know this love that surpasses knowledge" and what it feels like to "be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God" is the most amazing feeling and goes beyond anything that words can describe!

Embrace it. Share it. Be that love.
