Pray for a radio station in Croatia

This week of prayer may look a little different than normal. I'm an IMB Prayer Champion which simply means that I've volunteered to try to inspire my church and others to pray for missionaries, the unengaged and the unreached people groups of the world. Starting yesterday, November 29th through next Sunday, December 6th, is the Week of Prayer for International Missions. IMB has put together a wonderful collection of resources for this event, including a sheet that highlights one missionary, staff, and people group each day. That sheet includes a written version of their story, photos and a video. I'll share some information each day about the missionary/people group, their prayer requests, and the video, as well as the link to the sheet so that you can dig deeper if you like.
     Paul Chitwood, director of IMB wrote, "Please join me in praying that our missional reach might expand, as we await a multitude too great to number; a great multitude + you."

***
Today we're praying for missionary Eric Maroney, his wife, Julie, and their team in Zagreb, Croatia, where they've developed a radio ministry. Click here for the full sheet of information.

Prayer requests:
PRAY that more national partners will choose to be a part of sharing the gospel across Croatia.
PRAY that more church plants will result from the radio broadcast ministry.

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
Revelation 7:9-10 NKJV

A joyful shout

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.
Psalm 100:1-5 NKJV

I absolutely love this song! Amen!

Sing to the Lord

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods.
In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The heights of the hills are His also.
The sea is His, for He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.

Are you happy?

It's easy to praise God when we're happy, but we should also praise Him when we're suffering. When everything seems to be going wrong, I know that it's temporary, that it's happening for a reason, and that God will see me through it. I know there will be better days ahead. I can praise Him for being with me always, even through the trials.

James wrote:
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing
James 1:2-4 ESV

Do pray through the suffering and trials so that you can feel God's love and have comfort in His Glory.
Is anyone among you suffering?
Let him pray.
Is anyone cheerful?
Let him sing praise.
James 5:13 ESV

Let all give praise

Image by Esteban Rodriguez from Pixabay

The word Psalm means "a sacred song or hymn", so when a Catholic friend of mine said that they sing the Psalms, I was really excited, since they were meant to be sung! (I don't think Baptists or Methodists sing them usually.) So, I did a quick search and found someone who set the 150th Psalm to music.

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
Psalm 150 NKJV

Give praise to God, right now. Start out your prayer with, "I praise You, Father!" Lift up your hands to Him and give thanks!

Praise God

 Image by lumix2004 from Pixabay

With everything looking so different this year, and Thanksgiving coming up this week, it's sometimes easy to get wrapped up in worldly "things." We have to remember that God is sovereign. Everything that happens works for the good of His plan. I can rest in knowing that He is in control. For that, I give thanks.
     In our women's life group this past week, a Sister in Christ brought up that it's not enough to give thanks. We should also praise God. I hadn't really thought about that before. I do thank Him often, but I rarely praise Him. He is worthy of our constant praise.
     So, I thought during this week of Thanksgiving that we would focus our prayer time in praising our Lord. I'll be sharing numerous Psalms this week because I feel like David does an excellent job of praising our Father and we can pray his words.
     Focusing on praise and thanksgiving this week instead of what earthly troubles we're experiencing will soften our hearts and lift our spirits. I hope that it will shine through us to non-believers and they'll want that peace that we have.

Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God,
that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Hebrews 13:15 NKJV

Respect the elderly

This falls under the heading, laws of kindness, and justice. When you're old(er), how do you want to be treated? Think about what you say and do and then imagine someone being like that toward you. I don't even mean "bad" treatment, just treatment that's different than how you are with someone younger.
     For instance, a manager of a restaurant saying to an elderly woman, "Give me a hug, Grandma," or "Aren't you just so cute?!" (Two different restaurants). I hear people use a different voice with older friends and relatives than they do with others. It's as if they assume the person they're talking to won't understand what they're talking about. Be conscious of showing respect.

“You shall stand up before the gray head and
honor the face of an old man, and you shall f
ear your God: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:32 ESV

Strength

 Image by Carole Henderson from Pixabay
I don't know which is more difficult, watching our parents age physically or mentally. I guess it depends on which is more predominant in their daily life. My dad never lost his mental clarity. He had a bought with 'hospital induced dementia' after his hip surgery, but that went away.
     Two days before he passed away, we were trying to decide what to watch on tv, almost arguing about it for some reason. I asked him what he wanted to watch and he said he didn't give a @#%& about what tv show we watched, that he was going to be dead in 48 hours anyway. That really put things into perspective.
     So, with my dad, it was most difficult watching his body deteriorate, especially toward the end when he couldn't take care of himself. He was stubborn, though. He'd rather spill his pop than have me help him hold his cup. (This drove my mother crazy, which maybe contributed to his willingness to let it spill, lol.)
     I don't really have a point with all of this. It's part of life. Today's bible verses have to do with strength, and that's what made me think of it.

Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.
Psalm 71:9 ESV

The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
Proverbs 20:29 ESV

God carries us

Even to your old age, I am He,*
And even to gray hairs I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear;
Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
Isaiah 46:4 NKJV

 * Note: This is one of the reasons I like the NKJV... whenever God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit are referred to with pronouns, the word is capitalized. Reading the ESV, I often have to figure out who the pronoun is referring to. Plus, I believe that any reference to God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit should be capitalized anyway, out of respect. I use the ESV here because the language is easier to understand for many people.

Pray for the elderly

 Image by Gundula Vogel from Pixabay

One of the most heart-breaking things during this pandemic was the separation from those in nursing homes, and their separation from us. I don't have first-hand knowledge or experience with this, but often thought about it and prayed about it.
     My dad was in a nursing home for rehab after a partial hip replacement. My mom stayed with him most of the day every day and my brother and I went almost every day before or after work. I can't imagine if we hadn't been able to do that and I really can't imagine what that would have done to his mental and emotional state.
     What brought this up is a woman from my church is in the process of putting her dad into a nursing home. The procedure is complicated and time-consuming. Having to do this causes a range of emotions. But on top of all that, her dad won't be able to have visitors for the first two weeks while he quarantines. He suffers from dementia and she feels he's going to be confused and disoriented. It's weighing heavily on her.
     I'm not knocking the process; we're all making sacrifices during these unprecedented circumstances. It's just that my heart goes out to those most affected and most vulnerable. Let's pray for them this week.

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.
Proverbs 16:31 ESV

Be rooted in Him

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Meditate on His instruction

Blessed is the man
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law* of the Lord,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
    but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 1:1-6 ESV

Look forward

Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
Ponder the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.
Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil.

Seek wisdom and understanding

Image by Gordon Johnson from Pixabay

I read through numerous bible verses every morning to find the one that speaks to me and also goes along with the topic of prayer for the week. Today's verse was like, "bam," smacking my forehead and saying, "Here I am."
     I have been struggling with my feelings for a long time, but it's been worse recently. So, I've been praying for help, for God to soften my heart, and to show me how I can see things differently. I've also been praying for Him to help me with my focus away from earthly matters, and back on Him.
     Last evening, during bible study, someone talked about when we distance ourselves from God, we need to almost start all over again at building that relationship. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but getting back to that point where everything is about Him is a critical first step and I believe, the rest will follow. We build that relationship with Him through prayer and reading the Bible. That's where we find Him, so that's where we need to be.
     This verse is reassuring to me that I'm on the right track.

Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:2-5 ESV

God focused

 Image by PublicDomainPictures from Pixabay
Yesterday, my focus improved. It drifted back to earthly things several times, but it was an improvement over the past several weeks. Sometimes, I need physical "things" to help me focus on God, especially after I've spent so much time tied up in earthly concerns. So yesterday I started out by listening to a Christian music radio station on the way to work (K-Love). That helped lift my spirits. It also put a song in my head that reminded me of Him throughout the day: At the Cross by Chris Tomlin.
     Later in the day, I took my own advice and when I was tempted to scroll through the news apps, I put on my headphones and listened to a reading of the Psalms on the YouVersion app. I said little prayers throughout the day, but need to get back to where I was before becoming consumed with the world. Then, lastly, after dinner, I spent time in the word, reading scripture and commentary.
     I don't say any of this to boast but just to share that returning my focus on things above made a huge difference in my spiritual and mental state, even just approaching it with baby steps.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33 ESV

David Guzik wrote, regarding this verse:
iii. Jesus didn’t just tell them to stop worrying; He told them to replace worry with a concern for the kingdom of God. A habit or a passion can only be given up for a greater habit or passion.
iv. “What this verse demands is, therefore, a commitment to find and to do the will of God, to ally oneself totally with his purpose. And this commitment must come first.” (France)*
In talking about Matthew 6:22-23, Guzik refers to verse 33, and I've found this to be true:
Being single minded brings light to our lives, and we are also happier and more content when we focus on the kingdom of God and His righteousness, knowing that all the material things will be added to us (Matthew 6:33). But when we are double-minded, it is as if your whole body is full of darkness. We try to live for two masters at the same time, and it puts a dark shadow over everything in our life.*

Focus on things above

 Image by Pexels from Pixabay

A young lady in our Women's Bible Study group yesterday shared her frustration with where our (meaning the Church's) focus has been the past several months. It seems apparent that a lot of people have been focused on the presidential election. It's caused a great divide and has consumed so much of our attention that she feels, and I agree, that we haven't been as focused as we need to be on God.
     We're allowing ourselves to be consumed with earthly things and our spiritual welfare is suffering for it. Satan is winning (IMO). He's pitting husband against wife, son against mother, neighbor against neighbor. He's filling our hearts with hatred or at the very least, resentment. He's distracting us from what's important.
     I would like to encourage everyone to spend extra time in prayer this week. Instead of reading a news app, consider reading a chapter from Psalms instead. If you know someone who's feeling anxious or overwhelmed, reach out to them and be that voice of reason that they need right now. Focus on God, being His image-bearer, and a beacon of light in a world of darkness.

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Colossians 3:2 ESV

Pray for peace

Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

Peaceable wisdom

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James 3:13-18 ESV

A true Christian

This passage was titled "Marks of the True Christian." I strive to be like this.

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:9-21 ESV

Please join me this week in praying for humility, gentleness, patience, love, unity, and hope for God's chosen. Let's pray for peace and understanding, asking God to grant us the gifts necessary to stand unified as the body of Christ in showing the world that we stand for love. Above all else, we love our Father and trust in His sovereignty. Then, we love our neighbors as ourselves. We love; we don't hate. Pray for our nation and it's people.

A call to love

 Image by Clker-Free-Vector-Images from Pixabay

Today's the big day; not that we'll know for certain by the end of the night, but still, it's the beginning of the end of an event that's consumed our attention for a very long time.
     I just urge the Church to act in a way that will set an example for others; not that any of you would be a part of the anger, hostility, violence, or destruction. I just feel like if we consciously wear the full armor of God this week, and be the voice(s) of reason, maybe it will help others cope during this stressful time.

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.
Ephesians 4:1-7

My Pastor's Prayer

 Image by Gordon Johnson from Pixabay

With the elections finally here, I know a lot of us are very tense. We're worried about the aftermath, even dreading it. My Pastor gave a little talk about it and then a wonderful prayer. I felt hopeful, even reassured, so I wanted to share it. I've transcribed it below:
So, this week, Tuesday, a big day for our country. It's a Presidential election, Senators, other local, state people being elected. If you’ve been watching, if you’re a news media person, if you’re highly involved in watching what’s going on in the country, if you’re passionate about what’s happening in politics my guess is, regardless of where you come down, you’re probably a little anxious this week and I understand that. I'm a little anxious as well and my anxiety really comes from just, I want our country to be well. I want it to be at peace.
     Regardless of who wins, who loses. It doesn’t matter. I want our country to be at peace. Obviously some of our anxiety is that we're worried about whoever wins, will there will be peace after that? Will there be unrest? I think it's so important that first and foremost as we struggle with this anxiety wherever, what level you feel it on, is that you continue to remember that God is sovereign over all things. No matter who wins God is aware. Right? Nothing catches Him off-guard.
     Things are going to unfold just as He knows they're going to, just as He’s allowing it to unfold. His purposes are going to continue to be put forth and be accomplished and so we can rest in that and I know that sometimes we say that in like, “Oh that sounds so easy Pastor Rollie, but you don't know how it's going to affect our world.” You’re right. I don’t. But there’s been trouble in the world since the day they ate the fruit. Right? There’s been war. There’s been famine. There’s been pestilence.  There's been sin prevalent in all things and all of us. The world is groaning; the curse, and so, yes, we are in a unique time in our country right now.
     For most of us, this is a unique time, but we’ve been through WWI, WWII, the Vietnam War. There’s been others. There’s been civil rights issues, in our country. There have been big issues; all of that sort of thing. We're still here. We're still working.
     So, as the church, how can we be salt and light in this moment? No matter who wins, we’re peacemakers. That doesn’t mean that we say, “Oh it doesn't matter;” that we’re not passionate about what we want, what we believe. We should still fight for what we think is right and good and just. Maybe that's getting involved in some way and doing whatever it means to do that. but I want to encourage you that we should be peacemakers above all.
     The government has been given to us to bring peace and we play a role when we vote. It's nowhere in Scripture that you have to vote. Right? I think it's a privilege to do so in our country. I would encourage you to do that. I'm not here to say you absolutely must, but the government has been instituted by God for our good and we play a role in our government by voting and putting people in office, and so I want to encourage you to do that. But above all things, be unifiers. We should have a good witness. In Peter, it says be prepared to share the hope that is within you. So no matter what happens, the hope is in Christ, not in who wins. Right? Not in who wins. I just want to spend a few minutes to pray for our country this week.
     Father, we up come to You needy this morning. We’re reminded of our need because of the anxiety that we feel, the tension we recognize in our country that is always there, but there are times where it seems to be highlighted, rise up more than others, and so, Father, I believe, at least in my adult lifetime, this is one of those times.
     We know that it's that way because of sin and because of the sin in our own hearts and, Father, so as we approach this week, as we approach what is going to come after, help us first to remember and give us humility that we are fallen, broken creatures. We have rebelled. Sin has entered the world and it affects all of us, and so, Lord, I pray that as this election goes forth this week, and regardless, we pray for Your will to be done. So, whatever that is, Father, whatever happens this week, we want to be faithful to the Gospel. We want to be faithful to love our neighbor regardless of what party they’re from, what thing that they support politically, or what ethnic background they have, or rather they're immigrants legal or not, Father, we want to love people. Yes, we do want to support what is right and we want justice in our country. So, Father, we pray that Your justice will come and it will be ministered to a government that is honoring to You even though they are fallen, sinful people, Father, that they will heed Your will and they will accomplish the tasks that You have laid forth. So, Father, the church as a body of Christ, as individuals, may we find our hope, our assurance, our peace in You, in Christ this morning. So, Father, I pray that when we gather next week we will all be able to celebrate, no matter what happens this week because every day, we come before the throne and we’re reminded of what a great salvation we have in You and that nothing, nothing can ever take that away. Father, we praise You. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
Pastor Rollie Rench

God is my refuge and fortress

Image by Adam Derewecki from Pixabay

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge—
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91:1-16 ESV
