Verbal and emotional abuse

There was a man who was an alcoholic. When he drank too much he became belligerent. He would say cruel things. Then, at some point during his adult life, he was just belligerent all the time. He was a narcissist. He suffered from depression. He was neglected as a child. His wife didn't know all of these things before they got married. She didn't know that as soon as they got married, the alcoholic, narcissistic, man-child would emerge.
  When this side of him surfaced, his wife was confused. What happened to the fun-loving jokester who she thought she was marrying? He would have outbursts and say terrible things to her. He got in her face and yelled whenever she did something that upset him.
   She moved into his house after the wedding. Her few measly possessions, sentimental ceramic figurines, she placed gingerly on the shelf above the tv. The rest of her things were in the bedroom.
   One day he said, "You should put these figurines away."
   She asked, "Why?"
   He said, "They could get broken."
   She laughed it off as a silly idea. Surely he was joking. He wasn't.
   The next day she came home from work to find her favorite figurine broken into several pieces. She looked at her husband in disbelief, "What happened?"
   He just shrugged. Without even looking at her he said, "I told you you should put them away. They could get broken."
   With tears in her eyes, she boxed up the rest of the figures. They've remained in that box for thirty-six years.
   That was just the start of the verbal and emotional abuse. Family and friends told her she should leave him, but she couldn't imagine doing that. She believed she couldn't live without him. Whether that was something that he managed to plant in her mind, we'll never know, but she stuck it out for twenty-five years until he died. It was a co-dependent relationship. She suffers to this day from PTSD, depression, and anxiety; so do her children. Even though he's been dead for ten years, certain things still trigger those old responses.
   None of this is even the tragedy. The truly sad part was that she walked away from God three years before meeting this man. She suffered alone with her children without the loving hands of her Heavenly Father. Thankfully, He called her back to Him and embraced her with open arms. He got her through the last few years of being a wife and caregiver to her dying husband.
   To anyone who feels like God has abandoned them during their darkest hour, I just want you to know that He is right there with you. You may not realize it during that time, but believe me, you don't want to know the feeling of being apart from Him through the valleys of life. Know He is there and that He loves you. He is holding your hand.

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’
Isaiah 41:13 NKJV

Distress from grief

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eye is wasted from grief; my soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.
Psalm 31:9-10 ESV

I encourage you to take refuge in the Lord. Spend time with Him. Talk with Him and listen.

What's the plan?

 Image by congerdesign from Pixabay
There was an article in the Dayton Daily News that supports my "theory" about there being so many more deaths in the past year than in previous years. It turns out, 2020 was the deadliest year in at least the past 25 years for diseases other than Covid, although, they think it's possible that circumstances of the pandemic may have indirectly led to more deaths. You can read the article here for more information.
     So, I wondered what this means as far as the Church? Is God calling more of His children home because it's the start of the end? Is He trying to get our attention and remind us of our purpose here? I don't know. We can't know. But, what we do know is what the Bible tells us...(paraphrasing here)
     - We're to be ready
     - We're to be sharing the Good News
     - We're to be praying and in the word
     - God is sovereign over all things, so we don't need to worry or be anxious because He's in control and everything happens according to His plan.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV

Grieving

 Image by Andrew Martin from Pixabay

I'm sure I've talked about the 5 stages of grief before: Denial, Anger, Depression, Bargaining, and Acceptance. Other models are out there, one that includes Shock and Testing, and one that's diagramed below.
By Rebestalic - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=87759815

But, I came across this quote that I think is the best theory of all:

“There are really only two stages of grief, ... who you were before and who you are after.”
Ted Rynearson

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 ESV

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 ESV

Grief and sorrow

I wanted to thank everyone who's been praying for my cousin, Stephanie. It's with a heavy heart that I share she passed away last Tuesday. For the past week, I've been writing in my journal about what she went through and what she must have been going through. I've looked up what a CPAP/BiPAP machine is, what an airvo machine is. I've researched what all is involved to be intubated on a ventilator, to be on dialysis, and to have a feeding tube. I've looked at diagrams and images of all of these things because that's what Stephanie went through for four weeks before her heart just couldn't take it anymore.
     Stephanie is now the second person I know to have died from COVID. Yet, there are still many people who don't believe that it's "that bad." Last week I checked the numbers and 2,240,000 people have died from this disease worldwide. Whether you believe the actual numbers or not, it's still astronomical.
     In the past year, I've lost friends and family to heart attacks, pneumonia, cancer, and covid. The number of deaths seems to be disproportional to any other year, so I would like to take this week to pray for everyone who is grieving. I'm specifically praying today for the friends and families of Robert, Chloe, Sheila, Shanda, Tim, and Stephanie; I know I'm missing several others.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV

Put on love

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:12-17 ESV

Unity of mind

I am so thankful and relieved that we didn't see the violence that was anticipated this past week. I am also exceedingly thankful for the men and women who serve in our National Guard. They are a blessing to our country.

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For

“Whoever desires to love life
    and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
    and his lips from speaking deceit;
let him turn away from evil and do good;
    let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Bless our nation

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
For He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it stood fast.

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.

The Lord looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men.
From the place of His dwelling He looks
On all the inhabitants of the earth;
He fashions their hearts individually;
He considers all their works.

No king is saved by the multitude of an army;
A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
A horse is a vain hope for safety;
Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy,
To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name.
Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
Just as we hope in You.
Psalm 33:8-22 NKJV

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Sleep of a laborer

 Image by Engin Akyurt from Pixabay
I read some commentary on today's bible verse and it has to do with anxiety; unfortunately, I believe Soloman may have been out of touch with the plight of the "laborer" if he thought that the workers had less to worry about than the rich, and therefore slept better. Maybe it was true in his day. I don't know. I do know that I was poor most of my adult life and was just as anxious (if not more anxious) than I am now. Not that I'm rich, but I'm a lot more "comfortable" economically than I used to be.
     Whatever causes our anxiety or whatever keeps us from sleep, we need to make an effort to work it out. Talk to God. Let go of what's troubling us and put our faith in Him, 100%, that He will take care of everything.

Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much,
but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.
Ecclesiastes 5:12 ESV

Bread of anxious toil

 Image by Pexels from Pixabay

After I posted Monday, I thought it probably doesn't make sense to a lot of people what 'fear of not sleeping' looks like, so I thought I should explain...by that time I'd given up all hope (and effort) of falling asleep on my own. It had been years and years of trying anything and everything to fall asleep and stay asleep, so at some point, I just started taking sleeping pills every night. The first few years I took prescription medication (only half a pill), but then they (the medical profession) discovered that this wasn't the non-addictive, non-side-effect wonder-drug that they thought it was. So my doctor started pressing me to go off of the medicine. Eventually, I did and switched to over-the-counter just so I didn't have to hear about it every time I saw him. The problem was that even half a pill seem to leave me excessively tired the next morning, so I had to quit taking them.
     I still had the problem of anticipating that I wouldn't/couldn't fall asleep, and most nights
not being able to quiet my mind enough to sleep anyway. Anyone who's ever had a rough night knows how it affects the next day. Imagine every day being like that. I couldn't do it on my own. I needed help.
     I talked with my therapist about it. She's really good about pointing out, "what's the worst that could happen if...?" So, what if I didn't read the news right before bed? Would it still be there in the morning? What's the worst that could happen if I didn't take work home with me? What's the worst that could happen if I gave all of my anxieties over to God?
     I worked on those things and also combined different non-medicine "tricks" that I had tried over the past several years to create a sort of bedtime routine. I cut off devices an hour before bed, went to bed and woke up at about the same time every day, etc. But, ultimately what I think really helped was letting go of that anxiety, that anticipation or expectation that I wouldn't be able to fall asleep. I put God in charge and "rested" in His sovereignty. The last 30 to 60 minutes before bed is now spent with Him, reading His word, and praying.
     Secondly, I downloaded an app called Insight Timer. There are two pieces that I listen to, alternating them each night: "Delta Waves & Oceanic Sounds for Deep Rest" by Lotusopus and "Deep Sleep Music - 1.5Hz Binaural Beats for Sleep" by Aaron Darrell. There are several more, but these work for me. They run for almost an hour each but I hardly ever hear the end of the music. If you don't want to download the app, there is similar music available on YouTube.
     I hope this helps. The thing is, there's a really good chance that anxiety is the root cause of your/my insomnia so investigate what's behind that. Pray about it. Let go of that anxiety (I know that's easier said than done) and know that no amount of tossing and turning is going to solve the problems of the world. God will watch over you while you sleep. He is sovereign over all things, so let go. He's in charge, so let Him take care of you, watch over you, His child.

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
Psalm 127:2 ESV
